The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) had released the results of the first and second quarters of the Swachh Survekshan 2020.
In the over 10 lakh population category, Indore topped the list.
This is for the fourth consecutive year that Indore became the cleanest city in India.
In 1 lakh to 10 lakh population category, Jamshedpur topped the list.
This is for the first time that Swachh Survekshan is being conducted in a league format.
The rankings were split into three quarters – April to June, July to September, and October to December 2019.
Also, the rankings were formed into different categories based on the population of the city.
Other Top Performers
Bhopal which was second in the first quarter was replaced by Rajkot of Gujarat in the second quarter.
While Surat was at the third position in the first quarter, it was replaced by Navi Mumbai in the second quarter.
Among cities with 1 lakh to 10 lakh population, New Delhi fell from the second position to the sixth position in the second quarter.
The final Swachh Survekshan 2020 rankings will begin with a national-level survey in January.
Among 49 big cities, Kolkata is at the bottom of the list in both the quarters as West Bengal did not participate in the ranking exercise.
Since the first Swachh Survekshan rankings began, there is a healthy competition among states to grab the top spot. As such, cities across the country have taken cleanliness seriously. But still, there is a lot to do to make our cities truly clean.
