About Civil Services Exam

The Royal commission on the Superior Civil Services in India under chairmanship of Lord Lee, Which submitted its report in 1924, recommended the setting up of the Public Service Commission. This led to the establishment of the first Public Service Commission on October 1, 1926 under the chairmanship of Sir Ross Barker. The Limited advisory function accorded to the Public Service Commission and continued stress on this aspect by the leader of our freedom movement resulted in the setting up of a Federal Public Service Commission under the Government of India Act, 1935. The Constituent Assembly, after independence, saw the need for giving a secure and autonomous status to Public Service Commission both at Federal and Provincial levels for ensuring unbiased recruitment to Civil Services as also for protection of service interests. With the promulgation of the new Constitution for independent India on 26th January, 1950, the Federal Public Service Commission was accorded a constitutional status as an autonomous entity and given the title - Union Public Service CommissionEarlier separate exams were conducted for various Civil Services. The combined entrance for the all the Civil Services and system of preliminary examination was introduced in 1979

The Civil Services examination is conducted by the UPSC in three stages:-

Civil Services Preliminary Examination-CSP (Normally held in mid of August every year).
Civil Services MAIN Examination-CSM (held in December every year)
Personality Test (held in April-May every year)

Note: Candidates who have passed Civil Services Preliminary Examination will be Eligible to appear in Main Examination
