In the prestigious QS World University Rankings, Indian institutes are yet to find a place among the top 100.

The QS rankings released annually by the Quacquarelli Symonds, a global higher education consultancy, ranks the world’s top 1000 universities.
It gives overall global rankings, subject rankings in 48 different subjects, faculty rankings in five composite areas, graduate employability etc.
This is the sixteenth edition of QS World University Ranking.
It measures the performance of each University based on the following indicators:
- Academic Reputation – 40%
- Employer Reputation – 10%
- Faculty/Student Ratio – 20%
- Citations per Faculty – 20%
- International Faculty Ratio – 5%
- International Student Ratio – 5%

As per the rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay stood at 152 and is the top most ranked institute from the country. This is the second time in a row IIT Bombay achieved the feat.
The improvement in ranking for IIT Bombay is attributed to its good research performance. It is ranked 184 in Citations per Faculty indicator.
None of the institutes from India have been able to reach the top 100.
There are 3 institutes in the top 200 and 23 institutes in the top 1000. Of the 23, 9 institutes are in the above 500.
The top 3 are IIT Bombay (152), IIT Delhi (182) and IISc Bangalore (184).
Many of the institutes from the country declined in rank due to two criteria – Faculty/Student Ratio and International Student Ratio.

The silver lining is IISc Bangalore. It has been ranked 2nd in the world for research impact adjusted to faculty size. It has achieved 100/100 score for citations per faculty metric.
IISc is also the first institute from India to see its research cited more than 1 lakh times in a five-year period.
The rankings also showed that the research produced by an IISc faculty member was cited 261 times in a. Five-year period.
On average, Indian universities have made 37.18 citations per faculty member for five years.
OP Jindal Global University is the new entrant from India that found a place among the top 1000 universities.

Already the Union government has taken certain steps to increase the rankings of Indian Universities in global ranking lists.
Institute of Eminence (IoE) program and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Ministry of Human Resources Development works towards this goal.
The IoE program will grant IoE status to an institution, provide the necessary funding to improve its infrastructure and quality of education. This is expected to boost the rankings at the world stage.
NIRF ranks the institutions on five parameters – Teaching & Learning Resources, Research, and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcome, Outreach & Inclusivity, and Perception – annually.
