A paper published today in the journal Conservation Biology for the first time applies the IUCN Green Status of Species, a new Global Standard to measure how close a species is to being fully ecologically functional across its range, and how much it has recovered thanks to conservation action. In the paper, preliminary IUCN Green Status assessments for 181 species are presented.

Statement 1 is incorrect. The Green Status of Species was developed by IUCN in response to Resolution 2012. In this Resolution, IUCN called for the development of ‘Green Lists’ of Species, Ecosystems and Protected Areas, in order to measure conservation success in these three areas. Since 2012, a Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas has been launched, and the development of the Green Status of Species began under the name ‘Green List of Species’.

Statement 2 is correct.IUCN Green Status of Species is a new Global Standard to measure how close a species is to being fully ecologically functional across its range, and how much it has recovered thanks to conservation action. IUCN Green Status of Species is a tool for assessing the recovery of species populations and measuring their conservation success.

The IUCN Green Status of Species will be integrated into the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which will then provide a fuller picture of species’ conservation status including both their extinction risk and recovery progress.
