{"id":397,"date":"2017-11-02T09:47:25","date_gmt":"2017-11-02T09:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=397"},"modified":"2018-11-06T06:26:10","modified_gmt":"2018-11-06T06:26:10","slug":"investing-in-the-ecosystem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/investing-in-the-ecosystem\/","title":{"rendered":"Investing in the ecosystem"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"western\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/investing-in-the-ecosystem\/article19617085.ece\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Investing in the ecosystem<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">What in News:-<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">In April 2016, while inaugurating the third Asia ministerial conference on tiger conservation, Prime Minister NarendraModi paid tribute to nature.,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Emphasised the importance of reimagining the country\u2019s natural ecosystems as its \u2018natural capital\u2019 and factoring in the economic, social, cultural and spiritual value of ecosystem services into the calculation of true economic growth and development.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\"><b>Vast economic contribution<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Natural resources are a critical yet often ignored part of our country\u2019s national infrastructure. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Boasting 11% of the world\u2019s floral and faunal species, India is one of the 17 most ecologically diverse countries. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Blessed with every major ecosystem, these biomes directly contribute billions of dollars to the Indian economy, annually. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">The financial value of India\u2019s forests, for example, which encompass economic services such as timber and fuel wood, and ecological services such as carbon sequestration, is estimated to be $1.7 trillion.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\"><b>About EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\"> \u2018<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Earth Overshoot Day\u2019, a figurative calendar date when humanity\u2019s total annual resource consumption for the year overshoots the earth\u2019s capacity to regenerate it, has advanced every year at an alarming rate. This year it was observed on August 2.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\"><b>Negative effect of economy on environment<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Scientists have identified nine earth system processes to have boundaries which mark the safe zones, beyond which there is a risk of \u2018irreversible and abrupt environmental change\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Four of these boundaries have now been crossed \u2014 climate change, loss of biosphere integrity, land system change and altered biogeochemical cycles, such as phosphorus and nitrogen cycles. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">This means that human activity has already altered the balance of a few delicate equilibriums, the effects of which are reflected by changing weather patterns, accelerated extinction events for both flora and fauna, and global warming. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">This stresses the need for a comprehensive evaluation system that takes these undesirable side-effects of economic activities into account.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">As the biggest contributor to the economy, business needs to consider evaluating its impacts and dependencies as it would have a direct impact on capital assets and wealth.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">This translates to broadening valuation and risk management to include natural capital, as it is currently not reflected in market prices.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">In addition to shareholder wealth, holistic development calls for maximising returns from other key areas such as physical capital, human capital, natural capital and social capital.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">If valued properly, natural capital has the potential to optimise resources and thus maximise the net benefits of economic growth and development. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\"><b>Risk Mitigation<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Natural capital risk is one of many risks that an organisation faces, and a thorough natural capital assessment can help integrate this risk into risk management committee deliberations, legal and reputational risk framework. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Projects can be reassessed on the basis of their vulnerability to impacts and dependencies associated with the value chain. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Companies can consider environmental stress tests for issues such as natural disasters, air pollution, resource scarcity and climate.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Natural capital thinking can also create opportunities to innovate and adopt newer, more efficient technologies. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\"><b>Way forward<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Unlike the economic value of goods and services, the intangible nature of natural assets is mostly invisible and hence remains unaccounted for. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">While it may be difficult to put a price tag on nature, unchecked exploitation of scarce natural resources and an inadequate response to India\u2019s unique climate challenges can be a very costly mistake. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Making natural capital thinking the norm requires a strong policy push and the adoption of valuation frameworks such as the Natural Capital Coalition\u2019s Natural Capital Protocol.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #282828;\">Integrating natural capital assessment and valuation into our economic system is critical to usher in a truly sustainable future for
