of Airborne Coronavirus Transmission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>New research found evidence of the risk of airborne\ntransmission of coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>New study in Hyderabad\nand Mohali has found evidence that the risk of airborne transmission of the\ncoronavirus is if maintained sufficient physical distance and avoiding\nprolonged interaction with an infected person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Initially, the cause\nof COVID-19 was thought to be transmitted through contact and droplets during\nspeech, coughs, or sneezes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Later several studies\nreported transmission happened by sharing enclosed spaces like a closed room or\nvehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This showed that there\nis a possibility of virus travelling through air to greater distances than two\nor three feet which was considered as the zone of risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The study was a joint collaboration between Scientists from the Centre of Scientific and Industrial\nResearch (CSIR), the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad, and the Institute of Microbial Technology in\nChandigarh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The study conducted in\nthe two cities found that the risk of exposure\nin closed rooms through airborne transmission was higher and in normal\ncircumstances the virus was not found more than four feet from the infected\nperson.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researchers said that\ndemarcating COVID and Non-COVID areas was a good strategy and masks were still\nvery effective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Findings of the Study<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Researchers collected\n64 samples from six hospitals in different locations in two cities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researchers also\ncollected 17 samples from closed rooms which were occupied by the infected\npersons who were without masks and were asked to talk on the phone or with one\nanother.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From COVID areas of\nhospitals, four samples were taken and one from the closed room was to contain the virus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The strategy of\nseparating COVID and Non-COVID care areas was effective as the virus could not\nbe detected in the non-COVID areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the number of\nCOVID patients was higher in the room, the\npositivity rate was found to be higher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hospital\nexperiments were that in three-fourths of the samples were positive and the\nperson was 10 feet away from the nearest patient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This led to the\nconclusion that the long term presence of COVID positive patients in an\nenclosed space contributes to the significant increase in the aerosol burden in\nthe air.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the neutral\nconditions, there was no particular airflow direction and the virus did not\ntravel in the air.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The virus could not\npick up even at a distance of 4 feet when COVID positive patients spent a short\ntime of 20 minutes in the room.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This resulted in short term of exposure to COVID patients who may not put one at significant risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The samples collected\nat a distance of 8 feet and 12 feet were also negative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommendations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The CSIR issued an\nadvisory-\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Public Transport<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>With adequate\nprecautions, exposure to COVID-19 patients for\na short duration does not increase the risk of contracting diseases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The short duration\ntravel in Metro or local trains and buses is safe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For long-distance travel, the journey should be broken into two parts to minimize the risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Caution on Public Toilets<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The potential to\ngenerate aerosols while flushing can stay longer in the air and it is known\nthat the virus is excreted through stool.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Masks should always be\nkept while using public toilets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The same toilet should\nbe reused half an hour after the previous use and followed by adequate hand\nhygiene.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Home and Hospitals<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Even if the social\ndistance is maintained, spending more time in closed spaces is a risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less risk of infection\nis possible in open and ventilated spaces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a person tests\nCOVID-19 positive in a family, a home quarantine is advised and the person\nshould be isolated in a separate room to prevent the infection from
