{"id":2936,"date":"2021-01-06T12:37:44","date_gmt":"2021-01-06T07:07:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2936"},"modified":"2021-01-06T12:37:44","modified_gmt":"2021-01-06T07:07:44","slug":"fssai-limits-trans-fat-levels-in-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/fssai-limits-trans-fat-levels-in-food\/","title":{"rendered":"FSSAI Limits Trans Fat Levels in Food"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>FSSAI capped the limit for trans fat levels in foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The <strong>Food Safety and Standards Authority of\nIndia (FSSAI)<\/strong> <strong>slashes the limit for\ntrans fat levels in food.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>FASSI has capped the number of trans fatty acids (TFA) in oils\nand fats to 3% for 2021 and 2% by 2022.<\/strong><\/li><li>The <strong>current permissible limit is 5%<\/strong> and is\ndone through an amendment to the Food Safety and Standards Prohibition and\nRestriction on Sales Regulations.<\/li><li>The amendment was\nnotified by FSSAI on December 29.<\/li><li><strong>The revised regulations are for edible refined oils,\nVanaspati which is partially hydrogenated oils, margarine, bakery shortenings\nand other cooking mediums like vegetable fat spreads and mixed fat spreads.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Trans\nFats are linked with an increased risk of heart\nattacks and death from coronary heart diseases.<\/strong><\/li><li>According to the World\nHealth Organisation (WHO), globally, every\nyear, 5.4 lakh deaths take place due to the intake of industrially-produced trans-fatty acids.<\/li><li><strong>The WHO called for the global elimination of trans\nfat by 2023.<\/strong><\/li><li>The FSSAI rule came at\nthe time of pandemic where there was an increase in cardiovascular diseases\nalong with diabetes in COVID-19 patients.<\/li><li><strong>In 2011, India first passed a regulation that set a TFA limit of 10% in oils and fats, and 2015 further reduced it\nto 5%.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are Trans fats?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Industrially-produced trans fats are notoriously\nharmful to health. <\/li><li>Found in almost all processed food, these fats are the\nmajor reason for cardiovascular diseases. <\/li><li>Over the years, due to strict regulations from the\ngovernments, trans fats usage has been reduced considerably. <\/li><li>Trans fats, in essence, are unsaturated fats.&nbsp; <\/li><li>Though found naturally in meat and milk, natural trans\nfats do not harm health. <\/li><li>It is the industrially-produced trans fats in the form\nof Vanaspathi, vegetable oils and others, are harmful to health. <\/li><li>Consuming trans fats significantly increases the\nconcentration of bad cholesterol (LDL) thereby leading to the blockage of\ncoronary arteries and heart stroke.<\/li><li>Though human studies are inconclusive, trans fats can\ncause insulin resistance and thereby diabetes. <\/li><li>The change of trans fat limits by FSSAI thus augurs\nwell for the health of the residents of the country. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News FSSAI capped the limit for trans fat levels in foods.
