They are an emerging platform in targeted therapy.<\/li><li>Nanomiscelles are globe-like structures. <\/li><li>The outer shell is hydrophilic and the interior is\nhydrophobic. This dual property makes nanomicelles the perfect carrier for drug\ndelivery.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>For\nCancer Treatment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Now, nanomicelles are being used for cancer treatment. <\/li><li>A team of researchers has been using nanomicelles to\ndeliver the drug docetaxel, a commonly used drug to treat cancers such as\nbreast, colon and lung cancer.<\/li><li>The goal of cancer therapy is to destroy cancer cells\nwithout damaging healthy cells. <\/li><li>Chemotherapeutics for cancer treatment are highly\ntoxic. <\/li><li>Docetaxel being a hydrophobic drug is dissolved in a\nchemical mixture (polysorbate-80 and alcohol) which aggravates its toxicity. It\naffects the liver, lungs, and blood cells. <\/li><li>Here lies the importance of nanomicelles as efficient\ndrug carriers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The\nMechanism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Nanomicelles are around 100nm in size. <\/li><li>They are stable at room temperature.<\/li><li>When injected intravenously, nanomiscelles escape the\ncirculation and reach the solid tumors where the blood vessels are leaky. In\nhealthy organs, the leaky blood vessels are absent. <\/li><li>Due to chemical conjugation, the phospholipid docetaxel\nprodrug remains silent in the circulation.<\/li><li>But in the cancer cells, the enzymes will cleave the\nbond, the drug gets activated and the cancer cells are killed.<\/li><li>The effectiveness of the nanomicelles has been tested\non mice with breast tumor model.<\/li><li>Tumor regression is found in the model and toxicity is\nvery less compared to the currently used FDA-approved drug formulation.<\/li><li>Further promising results were found in higher\norganisms like rats, rabbits and rhesus monkeys.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mode of\nAction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Nanomiscelles work by enhancing the expression of tumor\nsuppressor genes.<\/li><li>The team is now working on developing a nanomicelle\nthat can carry multiple drugs for increasing the treatment effectiveness of\nindividual drugs.<\/li><li>According to the team, nanomicelles are extremely\ncost-effective and will become the next generation chemotherapeutic.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The team working on nanomicelles is Indian which earlier has\ndeveloped a hydrogel drug delivery system to carry a three-drug combination for\ncancer treatment.
