{"id":2877,"date":"2020-12-23T14:26:50","date_gmt":"2020-12-23T08:56:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2877"},"modified":"2020-12-23T14:26:50","modified_gmt":"2020-12-23T08:56:50","slug":"nfhs-on-malnutrition-in-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/nfhs-on-malnutrition-in-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"NFHS on Malnutrition in Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare released the\nfirst phase data of NFHS 2019-20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The Union Ministry of\nHealth and Family Welfare released the <strong>first\nphase data of the National Family Health and Survey (NFHS) 2019-20.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>When all\nthe phases are complete, the survey becomes NFHS-5.<\/strong><\/li><li>Despite dramatic\nimprovements in sanitation and access to fuel and drinking water, several\nstates have recorded worsening levels of child malnutrition.<\/li><li>The latest data is\nrecorded for 17 states that include Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal and 5 Union\nTerritories and J&amp;K.<\/li><li>In Phase 2, states\nlike Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab will be covered and the results\nare expected to be out by May 2021.<\/li><li>The first data phase\nshows that several states have witnessed <strong>a\nrise in<\/strong> <strong>child malnutrition under 5\nyears of age with parameters such as child stunting, child wasting, child\nmortality and share of children underweight.<\/strong><\/li><li>The parameters\nused for measuring child malnutrition by NFHS is similar to that of the Global Hunger Index.<\/li><li><strong>Child wasting is acute undernutrition. This refers to\nchildren having low weight for their height.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>States which witnessed high child wasting were Telangana, Bihar,\nKerala, Assam and UT of J&amp;K.<\/strong><\/li><li>Maharashtra and West\nBengal were stagnant on Child Wasting.<\/li><li>As per NFHS, the\nproportion of underweight children has increased in Gujarat, Maharashtra, West\nBengal, Telangana, Assam and Kerala.<\/li><li><strong>The reverse happened in child stunting which reflects\nchronic undernutrition and refers to the percentage of children who have low\nheight for their age.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Stunting may have long-lasting adverse effects on the cognitive and physical development\nof a child.<\/strong><\/li><li>There were increased\nlevels of stunting in states Telangana, Kerala, Gujarat, Maharashtra and West\nBengal.<\/li><li>Under 5 Mortality rate\ndata is stagnant in several states.<\/li><li>Infant Mortality Rate\nrefers to several deaths per 1000 live births for children under the age of 1.<\/li><li>Between NFHS-3 of 2004-05\nand NFHS 4 of 2015-16, there was progress in infant mortality reduction.<\/li><li>In NFHS-3, there were\n74 deaths per 1000 births Under 5 Mortality.<\/li><li>In NFHS-4, there were\n50 deaths per 1000 births Under 5 Mortality which shows a decline of 33% over\n10 years.<\/li><li><strong>NFHS-5 and NFHS-4 are five years apart but have very little progress in many states.<\/strong><\/li><li>In Maharashtra and\nBihar, the Under 5 Mortality Rate is the same in NFHS-5 and 4 and 3% over five\nyears.<\/li><li>Child mortality is\nrelated to child malnutrition.<\/li><li><strong>The NFHS-5 included new points such as disability,\npreschool education, and access to toilet facility, death registration, bathing\npractices during menstruation, methods and reasons for abortion.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An interesting fact to notice in the report is that the\nstates which reported high child undernutrition and stunting are in fact rich\nstates of the country. They are industrial powerhouses of the country and\ncontribute a large share of the country\u2019s GDP. Yet, the child malnutrition\nnumbers in these states did not represent the economic progress of these\nstates. This clearly shows that the priorities of these states lie elsewhere\nthan on giving children their rightful opportunity in life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of the population in the country leads a life\non a thin wire where even a minor financial catastrophe pushes them into\npoverty and it is the children who bear the brunt in the form of hunger and\nmalnutrition. \n\nThough the government has launched many schemes\nto alleviate hunger and malnutrition in the country, it seems the benefits are\nnot reaching the needy.
