{"id":2857,"date":"2020-12-07T11:28:21","date_gmt":"2020-12-07T05:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2857"},"modified":"2020-12-07T11:28:21","modified_gmt":"2020-12-07T05:58:21","slug":"warning-on-brahmaputra-floods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/warning-on-brahmaputra-floods\/","title":{"rendered":"Warning on Brahmaputra Floods"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul><li>Scientists were\nconcerned about the Brahmaputra River\u2019s potential for catastrophic flooding in\nthe future due to climate warming.<\/li><li>Brahmaputra river\nfloods cover vast areas in Northeast India, Assam, and continue its destruction\ninto Bangladesh and flow into the Bay of Bengal.<\/li><li>The present\nprojections of the river flooding are based on observations of past rainfall\npatterns.<\/li><li>But these observations\nrely on discharge-gauge records that date back to the 1950s. <\/li><li>The scientists\nconducted a new study based on tree rings.<\/li><li>Tree rings provided a\npicture of rainfall patterns of seven centuries.<\/li><li>The tree rings showed\nthat the post-1950s period was one of the\ndriest since 1300 and also the wetter periods in the past.<\/li><li>Scientists used\nclimate models for the simulation of future discharge.<\/li><li>Researchers found that\ndestructive floods may occur more frequently than imagined.<\/li><li>The tree ring shows\nthat the recent decades from the 1950s to 1980s were usually dry.<\/li><li>The study also\nsuggests that the future will likely be wetter due to the emission of carbon\ndioxide.<\/li><li>This suggests that\nthere is an underestimation of the current frequency of wet years and in turn\nof flooding.<\/li><li>The study found that\none would underestimate the danger by 24% to 38%.<\/li><li>The tree ring study\nshows that one can expect flooding to come about every three years.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tree Rings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>When soil moisture is\nhigh the tree rings grow wider in years.<\/li><li>These wider rings\nreflect more rainfall and higher river turnoff.<\/li><li>In wet monsoon years,\nthe trees in the region grow wider and put on wide rings.<\/li><li>In dry monsoon years,\nthey grow less and put on narrow rings.<\/li><li>These trees can live\nfor a long time and help to study the climate conditions for the past several\ncenturies.<\/li><li>This can be done by\ntaking a small, pencil-thin tree crore from the trees and measuring their rings\nunder a microscope.<\/li><li>The ancient trees were\nsampled at 28 sites in Tibet, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan.<\/li><li>The samples are\ncollected from the sites close enough to be affected by the same weather\nsystems at the Brahmaputra watershed.<\/li><li>With help of the\nrings, scientists built a 696-year chronology,\n1309 to 2004.<\/li><li>The tree rings gave\ninformation about the past river flow by informing how wet the upper part of\nthe basin was.<\/li><li>The scientists found\nthat the widest rings coincided with major flood years.<\/li><li>From this data,\nresearchers extrapolated the yearly river discharge in the centuries preceding\nmodern records.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Findings of the Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Records showed a\nmedian discharge of a river flow gauge in Northern Bangladesh about 41,000\ncubic metres per second from 1956 to 1986 and 43,000 cubic metres from 1987 to\n2004.<\/li><li>But the tree rings, in\ncontrast, showed that 1956-1986 was in only the 13<sup>th<\/sup> percentile for\nriver discharge and 1987-2004 in the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.<\/li><li>The rings showed the\ndry times in the 1400s, 1600s, and 1800s and also showed extreme flooding with\nno comparable period during 1956-2004.<\/li><li>The worst period was\nfrom 1560-1600, 1750-1800, and 1830-1860.<\/li><li>The existing discharge\nrecord would underestimate future flood hazards by 24-38% without factoring in\nclimate warming.<\/li><li>In this region, water\nends up as monsoon rainfall as high temperatures drive more evaporation of\nocean waters.<\/li><li>Low-lying areas of\nBangladesh hit the hardest when the river is flooded.<\/li><li>\u25cf&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\nResearchers noted that\nthe serious floods came in Bangladesh in 1998 and 70% went underwater and again\nin 2007 and 2014.<\/li><li>The new findings are\nrelevant to Assam and Northeast India and this risk can be reduced by planned\nprojects in the region.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Scientists were concerned about the Brahmaputra River\u2019s potential for catastrophic flooding in the future due to climate warming.
