{"id":2851,"date":"2020-12-07T11:14:17","date_gmt":"2020-12-07T05:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2851"},"modified":"2020-12-07T11:14:45","modified_gmt":"2020-12-07T05:44:45","slug":"children-health-is-being-adversely-affected-by-air-pollution-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/children-health-is-being-adversely-affected-by-air-pollution-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Children Health Is Being Adversely Affected by Air Pollution &#8211; Study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A two-year-long study has found that the instances of children\ngoing to emergency rooms (ER) for respiratory illnesses due to air pollution\nare on the rise in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In-Detail<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>According to the study, there is a correlation between\nER visits by children and a spike in air pollution levels.<\/li><li>It was found that the cause of the respiratory illness\nis not due to Particulate Matter 2.5 or PM10, but due to nitrous oxide and\nsulphur dioxide. <\/li><li>So far, studies have shown the relation between air\npollution and its adverse impacts on health. But, the specific impact of\nnitrous oxide or sulphur dioxide has not been studied.<\/li><li>The new study conducted by researchers from AIIMS,\nCSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Kalawati Saran Children\u2019s\nHospital and Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute is not yet peer-reviewed and is\navailable as a preprint on \u2018medRxiv\u2019.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The\nFindings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Studies have previously found that the impact of air\npollution is severe in children than in adults as the lungs of children are not\nfully developed which makes them vulnerable to lung inflammation and oxidative\nstress. <\/li><li>Also, children retain more air pollutants per unit body\nweight than adults due to higher respiration rates and outdoor physical\nactivity. <\/li><li>The authors of the study noted that when the levels of\npollutants nitrous oxide and sulphur dioxide spiked, there was an increase in\nER visits by children.<\/li><li>Nitrous oxide and Sulphur dioxide are predominantly\nreleased from vehicular exhaustion and industrial processes.<\/li><li>Over two years between June 2017 and February 2017, the\nstudy analysed hospital visits of 19,120 children.<\/li><li>It was found that there was a rough increase of 21-28%\nby children manifesting symptoms of acute respiratory disease during days\nof&nbsp; \u2018high\u2019 and \u2018moderate\u2019 level\npollution, compared to days of \u2018low pollution\u2019.<\/li><li>The researchers compared day-wise ER admissions of\nchildren with the levels of PM10, PM2.5, Ozone (O3), Nitrous Oxide (NO),\nSulphur Dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO).<\/li><li>The children aged between 5 months and 3 years were\nstudied. <\/li><li>The key findings of the study were that the ER visits\nincreased corresponding to the increase in SO2 and CO. <\/li><li>But, the traditional pollutants PM10 and PM2.5 which\nwere considered as the biggest threat to health had contrary results.
