{"id":2843,"date":"2020-12-02T15:24:47","date_gmt":"2020-12-02T09:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2843"},"modified":"2024-06-06T17:00:58","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T11:30:58","slug":"vulture-action-plan-2020-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/vulture-action-plan-2020-25\/","title":{"rendered":"Vulture Action Plan 2020-25"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For the conservation of vultures in the country, a Vulture\nAction Plan is launched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>For the conservation\nof vultures in the country, the Union Minister for Environment, Forests and\nClimate Change launched a <strong>Vulture Action\nPlan 2020-25<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since 1990, India saw a steep decline in the vulture numbers and is one of\nthe drastic declines of bird populations in the world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since 2006, the\nMinistry has been carrying a conservation project for vultures and now the\nproject is extended to 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The main focus of the\nproject is to halt the decline and also acts to increase the vulture\npopulation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the country, there\nare nine recorded species of vulture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The species are the\nOriental white-backed, slender-billed, Himalayan, long-billed, red-headed,\nEgyptian, bearded, Eurasian Griffon and cinereous.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The critically\nendangered species are the Oriental white-backed, long-billed, slender-billed\nand red-headed vultures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between 1990 and 2007,\nthe critically endangered species crashed massively with 99% of them wiped off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now, there is a\ndecline in the red-headed vultures with a decline of 91% and Egyptian vultures\nby 80%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Egyptian Vultures\nare listed as the endangered species.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While the Himalayan,\nbearded and cinereous vultures are listed as \u2018near threatened\u2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cause for the\ncrash in the vulture\u2019s population came into limelight in 2004.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cause of the crash\nis due to a drug called diclofenac.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diclofenac is a\nveterinary nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat\ninflammatory diseases like gout and pain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The vultures would\nfeed on this type of carcass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To eliminate 99% of\nthe vulture populations, 0.4-0.7% of animal carcasses contaminated with\ndiclofenac is sufficient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2006, the MoEFCC\nlaunched the Action Plan for vulture conservation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the same year, DCGI\nbanned the use of diclofenac.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Vulture\nConservation Breeding Programme was established by the Central Zoo Authority\n(CZA) and Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now this centre has\nthree critically endangered species that are bred in the captivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At present, there are\n8 centres and 396 vultures of the three species are present.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now the ministry has\nlaunched the conservation programme for the redheaded and the Egyptian vultures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At 8 different places\nin the country, the Vulture Safe Zone Programme is implemented and two in Uttar\nPradesh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By ensuring the\nminimum use of diclofenac, attempts are made to secure the vultures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When no toxic drugs\nare found in the pharmacy and cattle carcass surveys for two consecutive years\nand when there is no decline in the vulture population, then the area will be\ndeclared as a Vulture Safe Zone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The action plan aims\nto ensure that the sale of veterinary NSAIDs are regulated and livestock\ntreated by qualified veterinarians.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Ministry is\nplanning to develop safe NSAIDs on vultures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additional Conservation\nBreeding centres are also being planned, one\neach at Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Maharashtra, Karnataka and West Bengal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Vulture\nConservation centres, samples and information can be collected from the wild,\ncan be analysed and stored.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four Rescue Centres\nhave been proposed in Pinjore in the north, Guwahati in the Northeast, Bhopal\nin Central India and Hyderabad in South India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News For the conservation of vultures in the country, a Vulture Action Plan is launched.
