{"id":2808,"date":"2020-11-17T15:38:34","date_gmt":"2020-11-17T10:08:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2808"},"modified":"2020-11-17T15:38:34","modified_gmt":"2020-11-17T10:08:34","slug":"survey-on-biodiversity-of-ganga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/survey-on-biodiversity-of-ganga\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey on Biodiversity of Ganga"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A Survey on the main river of Ganga shows high biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The <strong>Wildlife Institute of India (WII)<\/strong> had\nconducted a survey on the biodiversity of the Ganga marking the <strong>12<sup>th<\/sup>\nanniversary of the declaration of Ganga as a\nnational river.<\/strong><\/li><li>The WII is in the\nsecond phase of the survey on the entire mainstream of the Ganga river.<\/li><li>The survey showed that<strong> 49% of the river has high biodiversity.<\/strong><\/li><li>The <strong>biodiversity includes Gangetic Dolphins and\nOtters <\/strong>with an increase in their number.<\/li><li>This indicates reduced\npollution levels and a healthier state of the river.<\/li><li>The WII will conduct\nthe second part of the Ganga survey and collects the data on how the river\nhabitat has increased and its effect on the species living in the river.<\/li><li>The <strong>first phase of the survey was conducted in\n2017-19.<\/strong><\/li><li>The WII took the initiative on behalf\nof the <strong>National\nMission for Clean Ganga.<\/strong><\/li><li>The <strong>National Mission for Clean Ganga is one of\nthe flagship projects under the Ministry of Jalshakti.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>This is the first survey conducted in the country on the\nentire river.<\/strong><\/li><li>The <strong>Ganga flows through 11 states<\/strong> along\nwith its tributaries and <strong>covers 26.3% of\nIndia\u2019s total geographical area.<\/strong><\/li><li>But the main stem of\nGanga flows through 5 states which include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand,\nJharkhand, and West Bengal.<\/li><li>The <strong>high biodiversity areas of 10% fall around\nthe national parks and sanctuaries like Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand,\nUttar Pradesh\u2019s Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary, and Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin\nSanctuary in Bihar.<\/strong><\/li><li>The high biodiversity\nareas are divided into six zones.<\/li><li>The <strong>six zones are Devprayag to Rishikesh-61km,\nBhitaura to Ghazipur-454Km, Makdumpur to Narora-147Km, Chhapra to\nKahalgaon-296Km, Sahibganj to Rajmahal-34Km, and Baharampur to\nBarackpore-246Km.<\/strong><\/li><li>The biodiversity\ntracking includes aquatic and semi-aquatic species such as the Gangetic\nDolphins, otters, gharials, turtles, and various waterbird species.<\/li><li>Many species found in\nthe main stem had been disappeared and are now coming back.<\/li><li>Researchers found the\nnesting colonies of <strong>Indian Skimmer and\nSeibold\u2019s a species of water snake which disappeared has now resurfaced.<\/strong><\/li><li>Researchers found many\nspecies that are traveling back from\ntributaries to the main stem of the river and also found new distributions of\nthe pufferfish.<\/li><li>In the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\ncentury, there were 10,000 Gangetic Dolphins were present and reduced to 3,526\nby 2000.<\/li><li>The dolphins\ndisappeared entirely in Haridwar and most of the Yamuna.<\/li><li>The rapid biodiversity\nof the Ganga is reduced due to the loss of suitable habitat conditions, change\nin the river\u2019s morphology due to the construction of barrages and dams,\nagriculture, bank alteration, and sand mining.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News A Survey on the main river of Ganga shows high biodiversity.
