{"id":2795,"date":"2020-11-05T16:02:12","date_gmt":"2020-11-05T10:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2795"},"modified":"2020-11-05T16:02:12","modified_gmt":"2020-11-05T10:32:12","slug":"farmers-benefittedfrom-accurate-forecasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/farmers-benefittedfrom-accurate-forecasting\/","title":{"rendered":"Farmers BenefittedFrom Accurate Forecasting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According\nto a study, accurate weather forecasting benefits farmers and livestock owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>According to the study, the total annual\neconomic benefits to the farmers and livestock owners has been increased with\nthe help of accurate weather forecasting by the Indian Meteorological\nDepartment (IMD) and agencies working under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.<\/li><li>The estimated total annual economic\nbenefits was Rs. 13,331 crore.<\/li><li>The incremental benefits for the next\nfive years is estimated to be Rs. 48,056 crores.<\/li><li>The total annual income gained by the\nfishermen due to better forecasting is calculated to be Rs. 663 crore.<\/li><li>The present value of benefits accruing\nthrough the agricultural farmers and livestock owners for a period of five\nyears is Rs. 2391 crore.<\/li><li>The <strong>National Council of Applied\nEconomic Research (NCEAR) conducted the study<\/strong>. The survey was done on\nbehalf of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).<\/li><li>The <strong>NCEAR is non-profit think tank of\neconomics and is an independent institution located in the national capital New\nDelhi.<\/strong><\/li><li>The key feature of the survey is to\nevaluate economic benefits of the government\u2019s investments in the <strong>National Monsoon\nmissio<\/strong>n which was launched in 2012.<\/li><li>The National Monsoon Mission is a Rs.1000\ncrore mission. <\/li><li>The survey shows that the country would\ngain economic benefits of worth Rs 50 for every rupee spent on the National\nMonsoon Mission and other high computing programmes of the MoeS.<\/li><li>The most prominent weather services for\nfarmers for their day-to-day operations is the IMD, which is an\nagro-meteorological services.<\/li><li>For fishermen, the weather forecast and\nwarnings are provided by the <strong>Indian National Centre for Ocean Information\nServices (INCOIS).<\/strong><\/li><li>Today, over 7 lakh fishermen use these\nservices.<\/li><li>The study was conducted across 173\nrain-fed districts in 16 states.<\/li><li>Based on the weather advisories, 98%\nfarmers made modifications to their farm practices.<\/li><li>This included changing breed of crop,\narranging storage of harvest, early or delayed harvesting, early or delayed\nsowing, changed schedule of ploughing and land preparation, change of pesticide\napplication schedule and change of irrigation schedule.<\/li><li>Around 94% of framers said that the\nweather forecast helped them in avoiding losses or increase income.<\/li><li>Using Ocean State Forecast (OSF)\nadvisories, 82% fishermen avoided venturing into the sea and 95% of them\navoided empty trips.<\/li><li>The OSF advisories helped to save\noperational costs of Rs 18.25 crore by avoiding venturing into the sea.<\/li><li>Additional catch generated with the help\nof Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) advisories had generated Rs 1.92 crore\nadditional income from 1,079 successful fishing expeditions.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National\nMonsoon Mission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The mission was launched to improve the\nmonsoon prediction capability of the country.<\/li><li>The mission aims at improving models in\nthe short, medium, extended and seasonal range scales.<\/li><li>The main objectives are<ul><li>To\nimprove improve Seasonal and Intra-seasonal Monsoon Forecast<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>To\nimprove Medium Range Forecast.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The Three participating institutions for\nthe Mission are<ul><li>Indian\nInstitute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>National\nCentre for Medium Range Weather Forecast, Noida<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>India\nMeteorological Department, New Delhi<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News According to a study, accurate weather forecasting benefits farmers and livestock owners.
