Detecting them is very difficult.<\/li><li>But, Polish astronomers from OGLE Survey have\nrecently discovered a rogue planet in our Milky Way Galaxy.<\/li><li>This particular rogue planet is the first one\ndetected to be of Earth size.<\/li><li>Till now, 4000 extrasolar planets have been\ndiscovered.<\/li><li>A common thing that underlines planets in our\nsolar system and extrasolar planets are that they orbit a star. <\/li><li>But, planet formation and evolution theories\npredict free-floating or rogue planets. <\/li><li>These planets are gravitationally unattached to\nany star.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How\nExoplanets are Discovered?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Exoplanets orbiting a star are generally\ndiscovered using the light shift in the planet\u2019s host star. <\/li><li>When an exoplanet passes in front of its host\nstar\u2019s disk, the star\u2019s light drops periodically in small amounts causing the\nso called <strong>transits.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Detecting\nRogue Planets <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Free-floating planets are hard to find using the\ntransit method as they exhibit no radiation as do not have a host star. <\/li><li>Instead, astronomers detect rogue planets using\nan astronomical phenomenon called <strong>gravitational microlensing.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Microlensing emanates from Einstein\u2019s theory\nof general relativity.<\/strong><\/li><li>According to the theory, a mass object can bend\nthe light of a background object. Here, the mass object is the lens and the\nbackground object can be a star.<\/li><li>When a mass object passes between an obeserver\non earth and the distant star, the object acts as a magnifying lens where the\ngravity of the object deflects the light from the background star for a brief\nperiod resulting in brightening of the source star\u2019s light.<\/li><li>According to astronomers, chances of observing\nmicrolensing is extremely rare as there must be perfect alignment between the\nobserver, the lens and the source star. <\/li><li>Thus, when one is hunting for microlensing\nevents, if only one source star is observed, one has to wait for another\nmillion years for microlensing to happen.<\/li><li>Thus, surveys such as OGLE survey observes\nmillions of source stars at the centre of the&nbsp;\nMilky Way Galaxy where microlensing events will be highest.<\/li><li>As microlensing does not depend on lens\u2019 brightness\nboth faint and dark objects such as planets can be detected.<\/li><li>The duration of microlensing depends on the mass\nof the lensing object &#8211; less massive objects will have shorter lensing\nduration.<\/li><li>Microlensing events associated with stars can be\nobserved for a few days. But, lending events associated with free-floating\nplanets can be observed only for a few hours. <\/li><li>Astronomers determine the mass of the object by\nmeasuring the duration of the lensing event and the shape of the light curve. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">OGLE\nSurvey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Polish astronomers of the OGLE survey are using\na 1.3-meter Warsaw Telescope located at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile to\nobserve microlensing events.<\/li><li>The rogue planet discovered has one of the\nshortest microlensing event recorded to date. <\/li><li>The event is named as OGLE-2016-BLG-1928 and the duration was 42\nminutes.<\/li><li>This is not the first time the OGLE survey had\ndetected a rogue planet. <\/li><li>A few years ago OGLE astronomers provided the\nfirst evidence for a large population of rogue stars in the Milky Way galaxy.<\/li><li>But, the new planet discovered is the smallest\nrogue planet discovered to date. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News Scientists have recently discovered a rogue planet in our Milky Way Galaxy, which is a rare find.
