{"id":2773,"date":"2020-10-30T12:15:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-30T06:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2773"},"modified":"2020-10-30T12:15:00","modified_gmt":"2020-10-30T06:45:00","slug":"solid-waste-to-wealth-tech-designed-by-csir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/solid-waste-to-wealth-tech-designed-by-csir\/","title":{"rendered":"Solid Waste to Wealth Tech Designed by CSIR"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers\ndeveloped sustainable processing of municipal solid waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The CSIR-CMERI developed a municipal solid waste\nprocessing facility plant.<\/li><li>The plant helps in achieving the decentralized decimation of solid wastes and\nalso creates value-added end products.<\/li><li>The new technology disposes of solid waste in a\nscientific way following the <strong>Solid Waste Management Rules (SWM), 2016,\nnotified by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.<\/strong><\/li><li>The primary focus is on the <strong>advanced\nsegregation techniques.<\/strong><\/li><li>The segregation system segregates solid waste\ninto metallic waste- metal body; metal\ncontainer inert-glass, stones, etc.; biodegradable waste- food,\nvegetables, fruits, grass;\nnon-biodegradable-plastics, packaging material, pouches, bottles etc.<\/li><li>In an anaerobic environment, the <strong>bio-degradable waste is\ndecomposed and is popularly known as bio-gasification.<\/strong><\/li><li>The <strong>biogas is used as a fuel for cooking and\nin the gas engine for the generation of electricity.<\/strong><\/li><li>The residual slurry is converted to compost\nknown as vermicomposting and utilized in organic farming.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Need\nfor Waste Management<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Due to rapid urbanization and increasing\npopulation, India is facing a waste managementchallenge.<\/li><li>The estimation of the volume of waste may rise\nfrom 62 million tonnes currently to 150 million tonnes by 2030.<\/li><li>There will be a huge requirement of landfill\narea for the dumping such huge volumes of garbage.<\/li><li>So there is an urgent need for scientific solid\nwaste management.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plasma Arc Gasification<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Solid waste management and disposing of\nutilizing <strong>plasma arc gasification<\/strong> is the best option for solid waste\nmanagement.<\/li><li><strong>This process is eco-friendlywhere a\nlarge volume reduction of waste of up to 90% is possible.<\/strong><\/li><li>This<strong> process utilizes electricity<\/strong> to\ngenerate high-temperature plasma &#8211;\n3000 degrees centigrade &#8211; inside the <strong>plasma reactor.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>In the plasma reactor, the waste is converted\ninto <\/strong><strong>syngas.<\/strong><\/li><li>The syngas passes through a series of gas\npurification systems.<\/li><li>The gas purification system consists of catalyst\ncompressors like convertor, redox reactor, cyclone separator, scrubber and\ncondenser.<\/li><li>The condenser is ready for use in gas engines\nfor electricity generation.<\/li><li>The ash obtained can be mixed with cement for the\npreparation of recycled bricks.<\/li><li>But this technology is not economically viable\nas the energy requirement for waste treatment is very high approximately\n1.5kWh\/kg of waste for small plants for &lt;100 MT capacity and for greater\nthan 100MT is approximately 1.2 kWh\/kg.<\/li><li>The recurring expenses make the process\nexpensive as the rate of electrode consumption is very high approximately\n500mg\/kg of waste processed.<\/li><li>In India, the solid waste generated majorly\nconsists of organic wastes (&gt;50%).<\/li><li>The disposal of organic waste produces\ngreenhouse gases.<\/li><li>The ineffective processing of Municipal Solid\nWastes causes many diseases as the landfills to transform into contamination\nhubs for pathogens, viruses and bacteria.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biomass\nWaste Disposal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The dry leaves, dead branches, dry grass are\nbiomass waste and these are disposed of by first shredding them into a suitable\nsize, then mixing them with the slurry of the biogas digester. <\/li><li>This mixture forms the feedstock for briquette\nwhich is subsequently used as a fuel for cooking.<\/li><li>Also, the briquette is utilized for the\nproduction of syngas for the generation of electricity.<\/li><li>The ash produced by burning the briquettes can\nbe used in cement bricks production by mixing an appropriate quantity of ash\nwith cement and water.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Polymer\nWaste Disposal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The polymer waste is disposed of through two\nmain processes.<\/li><li>In the <strong>pyrolysis process,<\/strong> the waste is\nheated to a temperature of <strong>400-600<\/strong><strong>\u00b0C<\/strong> in an <strong>anaerobic environment.<\/strong><\/li><li>The volatile matter comes out from the waste and\non condensation gives <strong>pyrolysis oil.<\/strong><\/li><li>The non-condensed syngas and pyrolysis oil are\nreused for heating purposes.<\/li><li>The char which is a solid material is mixed with\nthe biogas slurry for making briquette.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sanitary\nWaste Disposal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The sanitary napkins, masks and diapers are\ndisposed of by using high-temperature plasma.<\/li><li>The CSIR MSW facility is equipped with\ndisinfection capabilities.<\/li><li>The Decentralized Solid Waste Management plant\nhas the potential to scientifically manage the waste including COVID-19 and\nother viruses.<\/li><li>This helps to break the COVID-19 chain through\nUV-C Lights and Hot-Air Convection methods.<\/li><li>The pilot plant is self-sufficient in terms of\nenergy requirements.By installing roof-topped solar panels on the facility,\nsurplus energy can be provided to a mini-grid to operate the facility.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News Researchers developed sustainable processing of municipal solid waste.
