{"id":2770,"date":"2020-10-28T12:35:03","date_gmt":"2020-10-28T07:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2770"},"modified":"2020-10-28T12:35:03","modified_gmt":"2020-10-28T07:05:03","slug":"new-organ-in-throat-discovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/new-organ-in-throat-discovered\/","title":{"rendered":"New Organ in Throat Discovered"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers\nhave identified a new organ in the throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The<strong> Netherlands Cancer Institute<\/strong>\nresearchers have discovered a <strong>new organ in the throat.<\/strong><\/li><li>The researchers identified salivary glands in a\nnew location in the throat.<\/li><li>This will help radiation oncologists to bypass\nthe area in patients with head and neck tumoursto avoid any complications\nduring treatment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Salivary\nGland System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The researchers were studying a new type of scan\nto investigate the side effects of the radiation on the head and neck when they\nidentified two areas in the<strong> back of the nasopharynx.<\/strong><\/li><li>These areas are similar to salivary glands and\nhave the same characteristics.<\/li><li>In the human body, the salivary glands have\nthree major paired glands and 1000 minor glands that are spread over the\nmucosa.<\/li><li><strong>The salivary glands produce saliva which is\nnecessary for swallowing, digestion, dental hygiene, tasting and mastication.<\/strong><\/li><li>Researchers studied scans of 100 people and\nfound a bilateral structure at the back of the nasopharynx.<\/li><li>Researchers named the new gland<strong> \u201ctubarial glands\u201d.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>This gland would qualify as the fourth\nmajor salivary gland and the other glands are named as <\/strong><strong>parotid, sublingual and submandibular.<\/strong><\/li><li>These glands are present at the inaccessible\nanatomical location under the base of the skull.<\/li><li>This area can be visualized only by using nasal\nendoscopy.<\/li><li>The conventional CT scan, MRI and ultrasound\nhave not allowed the visualizations.<\/li><li><strong>A new type of scan called the PSMA PET\/CT\nscan was used which revealed the location of the new organ.<\/strong><\/li><li>Researchers identified that <strong>the major\nfunction of the gland is to moisten and lubricate the nasopharynx and the\noropharynx. <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importance\nof the Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Researchers believe that the discovery may help\nsome cancer patients with head and neck tumours.<\/li><li>The cancer patients are treated with radiation\ntherapy which can damage the salivary glands.<\/li><li>Now the radiation oncologists can bypass these\nareas and protect them from the side effects of radiation.<\/li><li>The side effects of the radiation can lead to\ncomplications like trouble in speaking and swallowing.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso, the discovery will help doctors determine issues\nin the nasopharynx and oropharynx which were earlier proven to be difficult\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News Researchers have identified a new organ in the throat.
