The reasons are below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Delhi\u2019s\nair quality starts to dip every year in October.<\/li><li>On October 15, the Air Quality Index\ntouched \u2018very poor\u2019 for the first time this season.<\/li><li>Air pollution in the whole Indo-Gangetic\nplains and Delhi is a complex phenomenon.<\/li><li>The weather during October, the input of\npollutants and the local conditions play a part in the rise of air pollution in\nDelhi in October.<\/li><li>In <strong>2015, a study conducted by\nIIT-Kanpur <\/strong>states that <strong>17-26% of all particulate matter in Delhi air\npollution in winter is biogas burning.<\/strong><\/li><li>The <strong>System Air Quality and Weather\nForecasting And Research (SAFAR) <\/strong>developed a system to calculate the\ncontribution of stubble burning.<\/li><li>The<strong> stubble burning season is around\n45 days long and in the beginning of October it has been 2%-4%.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rise of Air Pollution in October<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>In northwest India, October marks\nthe withdrawal of monsoons.<\/strong><\/li><li>The direction of the wind is towards the\neast during monsoons.<\/li><li>These winds carry moisture which travels\nfrom over the Bay of Bengal and brings rain to this region.<\/li><li>When the monsoon has withdrawn the\ndirection of the wind changes to northwesterly.<\/li><li>During summer the storms carry dust from\nRajasthan, Pakistan and Afghanistan and the direction of the wind is also to\nnorth westerly.<\/li><li>The scientists from the<strong> National\nPhysical Laboratory<\/strong> conducted a study and reviewed that the winter winds of\nDelhi, which is of 72% comes from\nnorthwest and the remaining 28% from the Indo-Gangetic plains.<\/li><li>In 2017, a far off storm in in Iraq,\nSaudi Arabia and Kuwait led to a drastic dip in air quality in Delhi, showing\nthe impact of the northwest winds on the Capital city\u2019s air.<\/li><li>The increased pollution is also due to\nthe dip in the temperatures.<\/li><li>As the temperature dips, the inversion\nheight is lowered where the concentration of pollutants in the air increases.<\/li><li><strong>Inversion height <\/strong><strong>is\nthe layer beyond which the pollutants cannot move into the upper layer of the\natmosphere.<\/strong><\/li><li>For dispersing pollutants, high speed\nwinds are very effective but winters bring a dip in wind speed.<\/li><li>The combination of these meteorological\nfactors make the region prone to pollution and other factors such as farm\nfires, dust storms add a high base to pollution.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Role of Farm Fires<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The easiest and low cost method to get\nrid of paddy stubble is the farm fire.<\/li><li>With the use of combine harvesters, the\npractice became more common.<\/li><li>The Farm fire practice gained acceptance\nfrom 2009 when the Punjab and Haryana government passed laws delaying the\nsowing of paddy.<\/li><li>This law allows conserving groundwater as\nthe new sowing cycle will coincide with monsoons and less water extraction. <\/li><li>This will make farmers to have little\ntime for sowing for the next time.<\/li><li>The paddy straw and stalk have high\nsilica content which is not suitable for livestock. So, the best way to get rid\nof it is to set fire to it.<\/li><li>The smoke residues from the fires, due to\nthe northwesterly movement of the winds travel to Delhi during the winter\nleading to an increase in pollution in the city.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sources of Air Pollution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In winter, the two biggest causes of\ndipping air quality in Delhi are dust and vehicular emissions.<\/li><li>The top contributor for air pollutionduring\nthe season is&nbsp; dust pollution which\ncontributes 56% of PM 10 and PM 2.5load at 59t\/d. The major source for dust\npollution is roads at 38% of PM 2.5 concentration.<\/li><li>Between October and June, there won\u2019t\nbe much rain due to which dust seems prevalent in the entire region.<\/li><li>The second contributor to air pollution\nis vehicular pollution &#8211; 20% PM 2.5 in winters.<\/li><li>Government has taken several steps to\nreduce pollution such as introducing BS VI cleaner fuel, push for electric\nvehicles, odd-even as an emergency measure and construction of Eastern and\nWestern Peripheral Expressways.<\/li><li>Still, Delhi is reeling under severe air\npollution every year. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News Every year in October, Delhi sees a sharp rise in its air pollution.
