{"id":2753,"date":"2020-10-21T15:17:49","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T09:47:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2753"},"modified":"2020-10-21T15:17:49","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T09:47:49","slug":"global-tb-report-indias-low-case-notifications-worrying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/global-tb-report-indias-low-case-notifications-worrying\/","title":{"rendered":"Global TB Report &#8211; India\u2019s Low Case Notifications Worrying"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nGlobal TB Report shows significant reductions in TB case notifications in\nIndia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>The World Health Organisation (WHO) released\nthe Global TB Report.<\/strong><\/li><li>WHO collected data from 200 countries which\nshowed a significant reduction in the notification of TB case.<\/li><li>According to the report, the disruptions in\nservices is caused due to Covid-19 pandemic.<\/li><li><strong>There has been a 25-30% drop in high burden\ncountries like India, Indonesia and the Philippines between January and June\n2020.<\/strong><\/li><li>The WHO said the reductions in notification\ncould lead to increase in tuberculosis deaths.<\/li><li>The analysis shows that there is a 50% drop in\nthe detection of TB cases over three months.<\/li><li>This may lead to 4,00,000 more deaths due to TB.<\/li><li>WHO said that the Covid-19 reversed the\nreduction in TB cases globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India\nScenario<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>In India, the TB case notifications fell by\nmore than 50% at the end of March and late April.<\/strong><\/li><li>In India, notifications of new patients\ndiagnosed with TB and relapse patients increased from 1.2 million in 2013 to\n2.2 million in 2019.<\/li><li>This increase is due to the rolling out of a\nnationwide web- and case-based reporting system called <strong>Nikshay.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Nikshay facilitates reporting of detected\ncases by care providers in the public and private sectors.<\/strong><\/li><li>From January till June 2019, 12.50 lakh TB cases\nwere notified to the <strong>National TB Elimination Programme.<\/strong><\/li><li>This year in the same period a total of 9.15\nlakh TB cases were notified.<\/li><li>In 2019, globally, 1.4 million (approximately)\npeople died due to TB.<\/li><li>It is estimated that 10 million people developed\nTB in 2019 and 3 million were not diagnosed with the disease or not officially\nreported to national authorities.<\/li><li>Before Covid-19 pandemic, many countries were\nmaking progress in tackling TB cases.<\/li><li>Between 2015 and 2019 there was a 9% reduction\nin the incidence and a 14% drop in deaths.<\/li><li>Now, countries have to tap in to some\ninnovations like public education through Whatsapp, usage of masks among people\nwith respiratory conditions, contact tracing apps, use of screening apps,\ntelehealth consults, sample collection closer to homes of patients,\ne-pharmacies, rapid molecular testing to check both TB and Covid-19 and digital\nadherence technologies for the completion of the treatment. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National\nTB Elimination Programme<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>India is a high burden country with respect to\ntuberculosis (TB). <\/li><li>An estimated 4,80,000 people die every year due\nto the disease. This means 1400 proper per day die of TB in the country. <\/li><li>The National TB Elimination Programme is the\nrenamed version of RNTCP (Revised National TB Control Programme). <\/li><li>RNTCP was launched in 1997 and is a flagship\nprogramme under the National Health Mission. <\/li><li>The National TB Elimination Programme is formed\nwith an aim to eliminate TB in the country by 2030, which is also the aim of\nNational Strategic Plan for Tuberculosis Elimination 2017-25. <\/li><li>The programme will provide technical and\nmanagerial support to anti-TB activities in the country.<\/li><li>Under the programme, free diagnosis and\ntreatment will be provided at designated public health care systems. <\/li><li>A key element in eliminating TB in the country\nis by identifying and notifying the disease. <\/li><li>As soon as a patient with TB is notified,\ntreatment begins immediately. <\/li><li>TB is curable if the treatment is continued\nwithout any halt. If not, the bacteria becomes resistant to medicines.<\/li><li>The WHO\u2019s assessment of low notifications in\nIndia should worry the authorities. <\/li><li>As undiagnosed patients increase, the threat of\nthe diseases spreading further increases.<\/li><li>India cannot afford the lapse and rectify the\nissue as soon as possible.
