{"id":2742,"date":"2020-10-21T13:55:02","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T08:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2742"},"modified":"2020-10-21T13:55:02","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T08:25:02","slug":"global-hunger-index-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/global-hunger-index-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Hunger Index 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>India\nranks 94 in the Global H<\/strong><strong>unger\nindex 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>According to the Global Hunger Index 2020, <strong>India\nhas the highest prevalence of wasted children under five years in the world.<\/strong><\/li><li>This indicates <strong>acute undernutrition of\nchildren under the age of five.<\/strong><\/li><li>In comparison to 2010-14 where it was 15.1%, <strong>the\nprevalence of child wasting has increased to 17.3% in the 2015-19 period.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Out of 107 countries in the Global Hunger\nIndex 2020, India ranks 94 which is lower than the neighbouring countries.<\/strong><\/li><li>The ranks of the neighbouring countries are\nBangladesh-75, Pakistan-88, Sri Lanka-64, Nepal-73.<\/li><li><strong>The report is released annually by <\/strong><strong>Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.<\/strong><\/li><li>India is classified as worst in <strong>child\nwastingwhich is low weight for height<\/strong>, reflecting acute undernutrition and <strong>child\nstunting which is low height for age<\/strong>, reflecting chronic undernutrition.<\/li><li>The two indicators together make up a third of\nthe total score.<\/li><li>India is still in the poorest category though it\nimproved from 54% in 2000 to less than 35% now.<\/li><li>On the other hand, child wasting has not\nimproved in decades.<\/li><li>India has improved in both child mortality rate\nand undernourishment with 3.7% and 14% respectively.<\/li><li>In the region of the south, east and\nsoutheastern Asia, only two countries were worse than India which are\nAfghanistan, Timor-Leste and North Korea.<\/li><li>According to the report, globally 690 million\npeople are undernourished.<\/li><li>The report says that the world is not on the\npath to <strong>achieving&nbsp;Sustainable Development Goal 2 which has called for\nZero Hunger by 2030.<\/strong><\/li><li>At present, 37 countries will fail to achieve\ntheir goal.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global Hunger Index<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The GHI is used to measure and track hunger at\nglobal, regional and national levels.<\/li><li>The <strong>indicators used for the Global Hunger\nIndex <\/strong>are<ul><li><strong>Undernourishment<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Child Wasting<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Child Stunting<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Child Mortality<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The GHI score of a country is classified based\non severity like low, moderate and serious.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The\nIndian Puzzle <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>India is\na fast-growing economy and implements one of the largest anti-malnutrition\nprogrammes in the world. Yet, the high numbers of malnourished children in the\ncountry is puzzling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some\nexperts believe that it is due to the faulty indicators that are used to\ndetermine malnourishment. The consideration of height as an indicator by World\nHealth Organisation (WHO) and other international organisations is the bone of\ncontention here. The experts argue that India is a vastly diverse country with\nsome communities having short stature. In such a scenario, how can they be\nconsidered malnourished, the experts argue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technicality\napart, the reality is, India has a huge malnourishment problem, especially in\nchildren. Malnourishment directly impacts a child\u2019s cognitive and mental\nability growing up. This means they will have tough chances to lift themselves\nsocially and economically. Further, malnourishment perpetuates inequality in\nsociety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some key\nfactors that will help improve children\u2019s nutrition in the country are <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Access to clean drinking water and sanitation.<\/li><li>Access to a low-cost and effective healthcare\nsystem.<\/li><li>States\u2019 investment in social welfare schemes.<\/li><li>Expanding nutrition to adolescent girls.<\/li><li>Improving the education status of women in the\ncountry.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News India ranks 94 in the Global Hunger index 2020.
