{"id":2739,"date":"2020-10-12T11:21:56","date_gmt":"2020-10-12T05:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2739"},"modified":"2020-10-12T11:21:56","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T05:51:56","slug":"drdo-conducts-smart-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/drdo-conducts-smart-test\/","title":{"rendered":"DRDO Conducts SMART Test"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>India\nconducted the flight test of a <strong>Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of\nTorpedo (SMART) <\/strong>successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The <strong>Defence Research and Development\nOrganisation (DRDO) developed the Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of\nTorpedo (SMART).<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Torpedoes are self-propelled weapons and can\ntravel underwater to hit a target but they have limited range.<\/strong><\/li><li>A typical torpedo has a range of about 12-15kms\nwhich brings a warship under direct threat of reciprocal attack. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Missile\nDevelopment <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>DRDO undertook the project to build capacity to\nlaunch torpedoes assisted by missiles in the mid-2010s.<\/li><li>The SMART system comprises a modified mechanism\nwhere the torpedo is mounted on a supersonic missile system.<\/li><li>The modifications will take the torpedo to a far\nlonger range than its own.<\/li><li>With the missile system, a torpedo gains the\nability to hit targets hundreds of kilometres away.<\/li><li>Also, due to the diversity in launch platforms\nfor the missile system it offers flexibility to launch torpedoes from anywhere.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Test\nResult<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The test was conducted from the Wheeler Island\noff the coast of Odisha.<\/li><li>DRDO said that the mission objectives were met\nperfectly. From the flight of the missile to its designated range and altitude\nto separation of the nose cone and release of the torpedo and deployment of\nVelocity Reduction Mechanism (VRM), the test was a test-book launch.<\/li><li>An anti-submarine torpedo of the light-weight\ncategory was used during the launch.<\/li><li>This test was followed by the test of the\nnuclear-capable Shaurya missile.<\/li><li>Shaurya missile is a land-based missile parallel\nto the submarine launched K-15 missile.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Significance\nof SMART<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>SMART is a game changing technology which shows\nits demonstration in anti-submarine warfare.<\/li><li>Couple with the Poseidon 8I anti-submarine\naircrafts of the Indian Navy, the SMART system can thwart any threat from\nsubmarines thousands of kilometres away from the Indian coast.<\/li><li>In light of China\u2019s growing influence in the Indian Ocean Region, India\u2019s anti-submarine warfare capacity building is crucial.<\/li><li>These warfare consists of deployment of\nsubmarines, specialized anti-submarine ships, air assets and state-of-the-art\nreconnaissance and detection mechanisms.<\/li><li>After the conclusion of a contract for <strong>Advanced\nTorpedo Decoy System &#8211; <\/strong><strong>Maareech<\/strong>,\nthe anti-submarine warfare capability got a boost with the SMART missile.<\/li><li>Mareech system can be fitted to all frontline\nwarships of the Indian Navy.<\/li><li>DRDO conducted two successful tests of the K\nfamily\u2019s missiles,\nwhich are launched from sea.<\/li><li>There is a great strategic importance for the\ncapability of launching nuclear weapons from submarine platforms.<\/li><li>These submarines can survive a first strike by\nan adversary and can also launch a strike retaliation.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News India conducted the flight test of a Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) successfully.
