Researchers\nhave uncovered a vaccine to boost the immune system of rice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientists from the Centre for Plant\nMolecular Biology (CPMB), and Osmania University,Hyderabad<\/strong>\nhave uncovered a vaccine to boost the immune system of rice.<\/li>
Researchers identified the mechanism by\nwhich a bacterium called Xoo (Xanthomonas oryzaepv. Oryzae), which causes a\nserious bacterial leaf blight disease in rice, infects and causes disease in\nrice plant.<\/strong><\/li>
For developing the vaccine, the\nresearchers have identified and developed few molecules which are derived from\neither Xoo bacterium or the infected rice cell walls.<\/li>
They developed new disease control\nstrategies and can use as vaccines that activate the rice immune system.<\/li>
It also provides resistance to the plants\nfrom subsequent infections by Xoo.<\/li>
Researchers carried out biochemical and\nfunctional studies on the plant cell wall degrading enzymes secreted by Xoo.<\/li>
It has provided key insights into the\nmechanisms by which the Xoo pathogen interacts with the rice plant and causes\nthe disease.<\/li>
Xoo\nis one of the major disruptors of rice cultivation in the world leading to huge\nyield losses.<\/li>
Researchers are working on a cellulose\nprotein secreted by Xoo.<\/li>
This protein has the features of a\ntypical vaccine as it is a potent elicitor of rice immune responses.<\/li>
Pre-treatment of a rice plant with this\nprotein provides resistance to rice against Xoo.<\/li>
When rice is treated with cellulase, a\ncell wall degrading enzyme secreted by Xoo will instigate immune response in\nthe rice plant and it further protects the rice from subsequent infections of\nXoo.<\/li>
Researchers are exploring the rice cell\nwall degradation products and when the elicitor molecules are identified, will\nbe used as a vaccine to activate the rice immune system.<\/li>
The best way to control the disease so\nfar was by introducing the Resistance \u2018R\u2019 which involves breeding and gene\nmanipulation techniques.<\/li>
This is time consuming, laborious and\nprovides only rare specific resistance.<\/li>
The elicitor molecule will have the\npotential to induce a broad spectrum resistance.<\/li>
This will be strong against Xoo and other\npathogens.<\/li>
