{"id":2726,"date":"2020-10-06T12:48:05","date_gmt":"2020-10-06T07:18:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2726"},"modified":"2020-10-06T12:48:05","modified_gmt":"2020-10-06T07:18:05","slug":"china-seeks-closer-ties-with-bangladesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/china-seeks-closer-ties-with-bangladesh\/","title":{"rendered":"China Seeks Closer Ties With Bangladesh"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>China\npitches for closer ties with Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>China and Bangladesh celebrated the 45<sup>th<\/sup>\nanniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations.<\/li><li>China is ready for closer ties with Bangladesh\nto jointly promote the construction of hits multi-Billion dollar <strong>Belt and\nRoad Initiative (BRI).<\/strong><\/li><li>This will make a strategic partnership of\nthe two countries to new heights.<\/li><li>With $26 billion Chinese investments and\n$38 billion funding commitments Bangladesh is one of the largest recipients of\nChina\u2019s\nmassive infrastructure financing.<\/li><li>China has offered zero-tariff treatment\nto 97% of Bangladesh\u2019s exports. <\/li><li>Now it added 5,161 items to the existing\nlist of 3,095 duty-free\nproducts.<\/li><li>The<strong> Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)\nseeks to build rail, maritime and road links from Asia to Europe and Africa in\na revival of ancient Silk Road trading routes.<\/strong><\/li><li>The BRI is the major bone of contention\nbetween India and China.<\/li><li>One of the portions passes through\nPakistan occupied Kashmir.<\/li><li>China initiated over $60 billion worth\nprojects in Pakistan as part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a\npart of BRI.<\/li><li>China has stepped up its huge\ninfrastructure investments in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.<\/li><li>The BRI is China\u2019s top priority as it aims to firm up\nChina\u2019s\nglobal influence.<\/li><li>The initiatives have attracted\nallegations from the US of debt diplomacy.<\/li><li>Sri Lanka handed over its Hambantota Port\nto a state-run Chinese firm in 2017 for 99 years lease in a debt swap amounting\nto $1.2 billion.<\/li><li>Malaysia has deferred several projects\nunder the BRI which cited cost revaluation.<\/li><li>The closeness of China and Bangladesh can\nbe seen in the way both the countries have worked jointly to fight COVID-19.\nChina had sent a medical team to Bangladesh.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unnerving\nIndia <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It seems China is encircling India with a\nstring of economic partnerships. <\/li><li>The String of pearls is a concept going\naround in the diplomatic circles as a strategy by China to counter India\u2019s rise\nin the region.<\/li><li>As part of the strategy, China would have\nclose economic and military relations with Indian neighbour countries. <\/li><li>Though the Chinese deny any such\nstrategy, the activities of China in the region lends weight to the strategy.<\/li><li>China has very close relations with\nPakistan and Nepal. <\/li><li>It has brought Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and\nthe Maldives under its economic influence by financing big-ticket projects in\nthese countries.<\/li><li>Off late, countries that took Chinese\nfinance are realising the burden of the debt they took.<\/li><li>India on the other hand is slippery\nsloppy when it comes to relations with its neighbourhood.<\/li><li>As recently as in September 2020, when\nthe domestic market necessitated India to ban onion export, Bangladesh raised\nconcern. Indian domestic politics, at times, cause a spoilsport in foreign\npolicy.<\/li><li>Nepal, with the support of China, is\nclaiming a region of India to be it\u2019s own.<\/li><li>Sri Lanka, embroiled in the Chinese debt\nis looking for alternatives and India is playing a good neighbour role with\nthat country.<\/li><li>Until recently, Maldives was under the\ninfluence of China and acted against Indian interests. The current\ndemocratically elected government is in favour of India, as such the Indian\ngovernment has announced a credit line for the development of the island nation.<\/li><li>India already lodged a strong protest\nagainst the CPEC in PoK. <\/li><li>Militarily, the standoff between India\nand China in Ladakh is unnerving India and the region as a whole. <\/li><li>Predicting the Chinese intentions is\nbecoming a challenge.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News China pitches for closer ties with Bangladesh.
