{"id":2719,"date":"2020-10-05T14:37:05","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T09:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2719"},"modified":"2020-10-06T12:51:57","modified_gmt":"2020-10-06T07:21:57","slug":"chinas-climate-change-commitment-and-what-india-can-learn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/chinas-climate-change-commitment-and-what-india-can-learn\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s Climate Change Commitment and What India Can Learn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>China promised to be carbon net-zero by 2060 and advanced the\ndeadline for reaching emissions peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>China made an unexpected announcement when the\nUN climate change conference is not happening due to the pandemic.<\/li><li>Speaking at the UN General Assembly, China made\ntwo promises that are to be carbon net-zero by 2060 and advanced the deadline\nfor reaching emissions peak.<\/li><li>According to Climate Action Tracker, the Chinese\ngoals would lower global warming projections for 2100 by about 0.2 degrees\nCelsius to 0.3 degrees Celsius.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">China\u2019s\nPromises<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>China announced to become carbon net-zero by\n2060. <\/li><li>Net-zero is a country\u2019s emissions compensated by absorptions and removal of\ngreenhouse gases from the atmosphere.<\/li><li>More carbon sinks can increase absorption such\nas forests, where the removal involves technologies such as carbon capture and\nstorage.<\/li><li>The second promise, China announced an important\nchange in China\u2019s already\ncommitted target for reaching the emissions peak.<\/li><li>It advanced the deadline from \u201cby 2030\u201d to \u201cbefore 2030\u201d.<\/li><li>China will not allow its greenhouse gas\nemissions to grow beyond that point.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Net-Zero<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>To achieve \u201cclimate neutrality\u201d by\n2050, there has been a concerted campaign.<\/li><li>This is referred to as the state of net-zero\nemissions that would require countries significantly reducing their emissions.<\/li><li>This can be achieved by increasing land and\nforest sinks that would absorb the emissions.<\/li><li>If sinks are not available, countries can use\ntechnologies that can remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases\nphysically from the atmosphere.<\/li><li>The climate change campaign groups say global\nneutrality by 2050 is the way to achieve the Paris Agreement target to keeping\nglobal temperatures from rising beyond 2 degrees Celsius to pre-industrial\ntimes.<\/li><li>The world is headed for a 3 degrees to 4 degree\nCelsius rise in temperature by 2100.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Significance of China\u2019s\nCommitment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>China accounts for 30% of global emissions and\nis the world\u2019s largest\nemitter of greenhouse gases.<\/li><li>It is more than the combined emissions in the\nUnited States, the European Union and India which is the next three biggest\nemitters.<\/li><li>China to commit itself to a net-zero target\nsince countries have pledged themselves to such long-term commitments.<\/li><li>The European Union is the only big emitter to\nhave committed itself to a net-zero emission status by 2050.<\/li><li>So far, more than 70 countries have made similar\ncommitments.<\/li><li>China, the United Nations, the European Union\nand India whose climate actions are crucial for achieving the Paris Agreement\nas they account for more than half of the global emissions.<\/li><li>This is followed by countries such as Russia,\nBrazil, South Africa, Japan and Australia.<\/li><li>South Africa has declared to become carbon\nneutral by 2050.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India\u2019s Commitment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>India has resisted pressure to make a long-term\ncommitment.<\/li><li>India has been arguing that the climate change\nactions it has been taking are in terms of achieving the Paris Agreement.<\/li><li>India and China have historically played\ntogether at the climate change negotiations.<\/li><li>The Chinese announcement may increase pressure\non India to follow and agree to long term commitment even if it is not 2050\nnet-zero goal.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News China promised to be carbon net-zero by 2060 and advanced the deadline for reaching emissions peak.
