{"id":2655,"date":"2020-07-29T15:55:30","date_gmt":"2020-07-29T10:25:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2655"},"modified":"2020-07-29T15:55:30","modified_gmt":"2020-07-29T10:25:30","slug":"the-lancet-report-on-indias-population","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/the-lancet-report-on-indias-population\/","title":{"rendered":"The Lancet Report on India\u2019s Population"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Lancet Report, India will be the world\u2019s most populous country by 2100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>According to the Lancet Report, India\u2019s population will be 1.6 billion by 2048, whereas the\nworking-age population is estimated to decline from 950 million in 2017 to 357\nmillion in 2100.<\/li><li>The Lancet Report used novel methods for\nforecasting fertility, mortality and migration.<\/li><li>Researchers from the Institute for Health\nMetrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington\u2019s School of Medicine used data from the Global Burden of\nDisease Study 2017 and concluded that by 2100, 183 countries will have total\nfertility rates below the replacement level of 2.1 births per woman.<\/li><li>According to the study, there will be a decline\nin the working population in countries like India and China. This may result in\nhampering the economic growth rate and shifts in global power.<\/li><li>The working aged 20-64 in India is projected to\ndecline from 762 million in 2017 to around 578 million by 2100.<\/li><li>The report shows that India will have the\nlargest working-age population in the world by 2100 and the second-largest net\nimmigration.<\/li><li>The global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ranking\nof India is expected to rise from 7<sup>th<\/sup> to 3<sup>rd<\/sup>.<\/li><li>The present total fertility rate (TFR) in India\nis below 2.1 in 2019 and is projected to have a TFR of 1.29 by 2100.<\/li><li>According to the study, 23 countries\u2019 populations may shrink by 50%\nincluding Japan, Italy, Spain and Thailand.<\/li><li>The world\u2019s\npopulation is predicted to rise by 9.7 billion in 2064 and fall to 8.8 billion\nby the end of the century.<\/li><li>The report highlights the challenges to the\neconomic growth of the shrinking population, health and social support systems\nof the aged population, shift in global age structure.<\/li><li>The global age structure is estimated by 2.37\nbillion individuals over 65 years in 2100 globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The report suggests that the countries should move towards\nliberal migration policies, survival improvements at all ages, economic\nindependence to women, and investment in the advanced technology that can\ncompensate for the human shortage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the current population levels favour India for decades to\ncome, it will eventually see a decline in its working age population. This\nmeans, the governments must focus on augmenting the existing elderly care\ncentres, more resources must be poured into geriatric care, and develop\ntechnological capabilities that will compensate for the less working age\npopulation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, the reality is, India is not thinking in that direction.\nAcross the country, elderly care is being considered as a loss of investment.\nIn the coming future, there will be a huge demand for elderly homes. Estimates\nfrom 2011 Census suggest that there is a need for 2.4 lakh elderly residential\nunits in urban areas and 51,500 units in rural areas. As the elderly population\nincreases, the requirement for these houses increases. But, India is nowhere\nnear having such facilities by 2100. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any country that doesn\u2019t care for its elderly is a country with a\nweak moral core. When the country is aspiring to be one among the best of\nnations in the world, India cannot ignore its elderly.
