{"id":2652,"date":"2020-07-27T12:50:47","date_gmt":"2020-07-27T07:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2652"},"modified":"2020-07-27T12:50:47","modified_gmt":"2020-07-27T07:20:47","slug":"mineral-magnetic-studies-to-forecast-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/mineral-magnetic-studies-to-forecast-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Mineral Magnetic Studies to Forecast Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The mineral magnetic studies can forecast the climatic changes\nfaster and more accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Scientists from the Indian Institute of\nGeomagnetism have tracked the climate change by following the Paleo monsoonal\npattern of India by harnessing <strong>magnetic mineralogy.<\/strong><\/li><li>This technique is faster and more accurate than\nthe existing techniques.<\/li><li><strong>Magnetic mineralogy is sensitive to changes\nin chemical and physical processes which result in concentration, grain size\nand mineralogy changes<\/strong>.<\/li><li>The team collated and conducted environmental\nand climatic studies by collecting sediment samples from different environments\nand climatic domains of India.<\/li><li>To collect the information from the frozen\nmagnetic minerals, researchers used parameters such as magnetic susceptibility\nand a hysteretic remnant magnetization, saturation induced remnant\nmagnetization, Curie temperature and hysteresis loops.<\/li><li><strong>For climatic studies, researchers generally\nuse several proxies like fossils, microorganisms, isotopes, gases trapped in\nice etc.<\/strong><\/li><li>This method takes long time efforts to segregate\nthe material and cumbersome laboratory technology. The instruments are very\ncostly and the material needed to measure are very vast.<\/li><li>For Indian monsoon and its variability, the\nscientists studied through different continental and oceanic proxies. The new\ntechnique applied for sub-continent by IIG scientists is changing in properties\nof the magnetic minerals.&nbsp; <\/li><li>This study helps to gauge the prevalent climatic\nchanges.<\/li><li>In sediments, the concentration of magnetic\nminerals is very low but this is sufficient to carry out climatic studies.<\/li><li>When the instrument is installed in the lab, the\noverhead and maintenance charges are quite moderate and cheap. The time taken\nis also very less. <\/li><li>With one magnetic parameter, hundred samples can\nbe tested in a day.<\/li><li>Four regional climatic features encompassing the\nentire Indian continent and one localized climatic event unfold with the help\nof magnetic mineral studies.<\/li><li>The four regional climatic features are i)\nhigher monsoon precipitation in the western part of India between 25-60 ka, ii)\nthe weakening of the monsoon in the Himalayas, iii) the hinterland of Arabian\nSea between 20 and 15 ka, iv) analogically cold and dry condition at Dhakuri.\nThe localized climatic event is the Younger Dryas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding the paleo climatic of a region helps scientists\ndetermine the climatic conditions of that period and can project a future\nscenario for the earth. With climate change becoming an existential threat to\nhuman beings, studies like above will help determine the causes and effects of\nclimate change. It also helps policymakers and the general public to take\naction to mitigate global warming and its impact on the climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When considered for Prelims, \u2018magnetic mineralogy\u2019 becomes a\npotential term for questioning.
