{"id":2637,"date":"2020-07-04T14:15:56","date_gmt":"2020-07-04T08:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2637"},"modified":"2020-07-04T14:15:56","modified_gmt":"2020-07-04T08:45:56","slug":"evolution-of-helium-stars-mystery-solved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/evolution-of-helium-stars-mystery-solved\/","title":{"rendered":"Evolution of Helium Stars Mystery Solved"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A study\nby the <strong>Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA)<\/strong> has solved the evolution\nmystery of <strong>Helium stars.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A study by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics\n(IIA), an autonomous institute of Department of Science and Technology had\nsolved the evolution mystery of hot Helium stars (EHes).<\/li><li>For the first time, researchers identified<strong>\nsingly ionized fluorine of hot extreme helium stars. <\/strong><\/li><li>This research shows the main formation of these\nstars is by the merger of a <strong>carbon-oxygen (CO) and a Helium (He) white\ndwarf.<\/strong><\/li><li>The singly ionized fluorine (F II) has a very\nhigh enrichment of fluorine. This is a factor of about 100 to 10000 times\nhigher than normal stars.<\/li><li>The scientists explored the relationship of hot\nEHes with the cooler EHes, based on their fluorine abundance and established an\nevolutionary connection.<\/li><li>For obtaining high resolution of EHs, <strong>Hanle Echelle Spectrograph (HESP)<\/strong>mounted\non <strong>2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope<\/strong> at the Indian Institute of\nAstronomical Observatory (IAO) in <strong>Hanle, Ladakh<\/strong> and is operated remotely\nby IIA along with data from McDonald Observatory, USA has been used.<\/li><li>By comparing the observations, the study shows\nthat fluorine is profusely produced during the merger of a He-CO WD resulting\nin carbon-rich EHe whereas the He-He-WD merger results in poor carbon EHes and\ndoes not have any fluorine.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About\nHelium Star<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Helium (EH), an extreme star, is a low mass\nsupergiant and is devoid of hydrogen.<\/li><li>So far 21 extreme helium stars were detectedin\nthe galaxy.<\/li><li>The origin and evolution of the hot hydrogen\ndeficient objects is a mystery.<\/li><li>Their chemical compositions are very peculiar\nthat does not match with the low mass evolved stars.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The\nChandra Telescope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The Himalayan Chandra Telescope or Indian\nAstronomical Observatory is located in Hanle, Ladakh. <\/li><li>It is one of the world\u2019s highest locations for\nastronomical observations.<\/li><li>The telescope is used to observe the universe in\noptical, gamma rays and infrared.<\/li><li>It has a diameter of 2.01m.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The study\nsolved the decades-old mystery on the evolution of the hot EHes. It places hot\nEHes in an evolutionary sequence with cool EHes and involves the merger of two\ndouble degenerate white dwarfs (WDs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nresearch also shows the capacity of Indian scientists to undertake advanced\nastrophysical research. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News A study by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) has solved the evolution mystery of Helium stars.
