{"id":2622,"date":"2020-05-14T11:15:42","date_gmt":"2020-05-14T05:45:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2622"},"modified":"2020-05-14T11:15:42","modified_gmt":"2020-05-14T05:45:42","slug":"sal-forest-tortoise-critically-endangered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/sal-forest-tortoise-critically-endangered\/","title":{"rendered":"Sal-Forest Tortoise- Critically Endangered"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The sal-forest tortoise is recently assessed as a critically\nendangered species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The sal-forest tortoise species found in India\ncome under the threatened category in the IUCN red list. <\/li><li>According to the IUCN, the population had fallen\nby 80% in the last three generations and is now a<strong> critically endangered\nspecies<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Due to human activities, there is a severe\nexistential threat to the species. <\/li><li>The tortoise is collected for food, for making\ndecorative masks and in international wildlife trade.<\/li><li>Ecologistsfrom\nthe Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, found that the area designated as a\nprotected area network is only a small habitat of the species.<\/li><li>Over 90% of the habitat distribution of the\nspecies falls outside the protected area.<\/li><li>The study also shows that 29% of the\ndistribution of the species falls within the high occurrence of fire zone\nareas. This includes the Uttarakhand state, which is the western distribution\nof the species.<\/li><li>Northeast India is a suitable place for the\nspecies, but they experience Jhum fire.<\/li><li>Forest fires may impact forest floor thus\nchanging the community on which the reptiles depend. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Effort of Monitoring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The WII ecologists say that the tortoise should be part of a regular\nmonitoring effort.<\/li><li>During summers, the tortoises select moist\npatches such as dry stream beds. Such moist patch areas should be protected\nfrom forest fires, they suggest.<\/li><li>Experts\nalso suggest that developing Conservation Units and transboundary\nconservation reserves such as Manas for the Indo-Bhutan region and the\nSundarbans for the India-Bangladesh region will help protect the species.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Sal-Forest Tortoise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The <strong>sal-forest tortoise<\/strong> is also known\nasan <strong>elongated tortoise<\/strong> (<em>Indotestudo\nelongate<\/em>) and as a <strong>yellow tortoise<\/strong> in many parts of Asia.<\/li><li>The sal-forest tortoise is found in Nepal,\nBangladesh, India, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, western\nMalaysia, and southern China.<\/li><li>The sal-forest tortoise is widely found in the <strong>eastern\nand northern parts of India<\/strong>.<\/li><li>They are small (12 to 14 inches long) and hardy,\nlong-lived.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IUCN<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The <strong>International Union for Conservation of\nNature (IUCN)<\/strong> is composed of <strong>both government and civil society\norganizations<\/strong>. It is established in the year 1964.<\/li><li>India is a member of IUCN from the year 1969.\nThe Indian country office was established in the year 2007 in New Delhi.<\/li><li>The IUCN India aims to reduce ecosystem and\nspecies loss by facilitating tools and knowledge to value, conserve, and use\nbiodiversity sustainability.<\/li><li>According to IUCN, 132 species of plants and\nanimals are listed as endangered species in India.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News The sal-forest tortoise is recently assessed as a critically endangered species.
