The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the COVID-19 as a\npandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Origin\nand Nature of Coronavirus<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>People infected with coronavirus were\nfirst detected in Chinese city Wuhan\u2019s Seafood Wholesale Market.<\/li><li>WHO named the virus COVID-19 and\ndeclared it a \u2018pandemic\u2019.Its technical name is Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome\nCoronavirus2 (SARS-CoV-2).<\/li><li>Coronaviruses are a group of viruses\ncausing common cold to fatal diseases, such as, Middle East Respiratory\nSyndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).<\/li><li>These are transmitted from animals to\nhumans, therefore, considered zoonotic. For example, SARS-CoV was transmitted\nin humans from civet cats.Covid-19\u2019s ability for continuous mutation allows it\nto jump to humans.<\/li><li>Covid-19 is transmitted among humans mainly\nthrough respiratory droplets.<\/li><li>The incubation period of Covid-19 is\nusually 14 days.<\/li><li>To test Covid-19 positive people,\nPolymerase Chain Reaction Test is done which detects the genetic material of\nthe virus, that is, RNA in the human sample. <\/li><li>Hydroxychloroquine has been touted as a\npossible remedy to COVID-19, but medical experts are still divided over its\nefficacy.<ul><li>It is similar to the anti-malarial drug\nchloroquine.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Used in treating auto-immune diseases\nlike rheumatoid arthritis.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>India is one of the biggest\nmanufacturers of this drug.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>International\nResponse<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund<\/strong>\nhas been announced by WHO to mobilize various businesses, institutions and\nprivate individuals against the pandemic.<\/li><li><strong>COVID Action Platform, <\/strong>created\nbyWorld Economic Forum along with WHO, aimsto provide a platform for a\ncollective action against the pandemic by the business community all over the\nworld.<\/li><li><strong>Emergency Fund<\/strong>has\nbeen created under SAARC to respond to the pandemic within South Asia.\nContributions to the fund are voluntary.<\/li><li>UN General-Secretary launched the <strong>COVID-19\nGlobal Humanitarian Response Plan<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness\nInnovations<\/strong> (CEPI), launched by WEF in 2017, is\nbringing together sections of academia, civil society, business and government\nleaders to develop a vaccine against Covid-19.<\/li><li>Resolution named \u2018<strong>Global solidarity\nto fight the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)<\/strong>\u2019 has been unanimously\nadopted by UN General Assembly which outlines the problem of racism and\nxenophobia in the fight against the pandemic.<\/li><li>UN Security Council held a virtual\nclosed session to discuss the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Indian\nGovernment\u2019s Response <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 has been\ninvoked.<\/li><li>National Disaster Management Act has\nbeen invoked to bring states under direct control of Centre to ensure\ncoordination.<\/li><li>India\u2019s experience in dealing with Ebola\nin 2014 and Nipah in 2018 has been applied in taking quick quarantine and\nsurveillance measures.<\/li><li>Indian government has identified certain\n\u2018hotspots\u2019 which are to be sealed to prevent further spread of the pandemic.\nThe criterion for a hotspot is still subject to change as it is based on the\ncontinuous data inputs on the spread of virus. Even a single case in an area is\nenough to consider it a hotspot if it poses the risk of a wider spread.<\/li><li>Indian government has launched\nAarogyaSetu Mobile App, developed by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, to\nidentify those infected by Covid-19 through self-testing and contact tracing\nusing Bluetooth and GPS.<\/li><li>Ministry of Tourism has launched a\nportal \u2018Stranded in India\u2019 to assist tourists.<\/li><li>To check misinformation\/fake news, a\nFact Check Unit has been set up in the Press Information Bureau.<\/li><li>To counter the shortage of testing kits,\nthe National Institute of Virology, which falls under the Indian Council on\nMedical Research has approved Covid-19 testing kits manufactured by domestic\nprivate firms.<\/li><li>There is still no news of community transmission\nin India, which is when the source of infection is unknown. Following are the 4\nstages of pandemic spread-<ul><li>Stage 1 \u2013 First appearance of the\ndisease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Stage 2 \u2013 Local transmission<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Stage 3 \u2013 Community transmission<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Stage 4 \u2013 Widespread outbreak. E.g. US\nand Italy<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Economic\nImpact of the Pandemic<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Due to the shutdown of industries in\nChina and other manufacturing hubs, there has been a <strong>disruption of supply\nchains<\/strong> which has resulted in the scarcity of finished and intermediate\ngood. In case of India, its dependence on China for approximately 85% of active\npharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) has exposed its pharmaceutical sector to price\nvolatility.<\/li><li>US companies severely affected by the\nshortage of intermediate goods may cut down on their dependence on China, thus\nfurther intensifying the <strong>trade war<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Banking sector has come under intense\npressure for the expected <strong>default on loans<\/strong> in huge numbers, not just by\nprivate individuals but also industries. Consequently, the bad loan crisis is\ngoing to get worse in the Indian banks, to which RBI has responded by pumping\nmore liquidity in the system.<\/li><li>Internationally, the possibility of insolvency\nand default has triggered capital flight in emerging economies and a sharp drop\nin global <strong>FDI<\/strong>.<\/li><li>IMF has declared <strong>global recession<\/strong>\ncomparable to the 2009 financial crisis. <\/li><li>With oil consumption by manufacturing\nindustries and vehicles going down, <strong>oil prices<\/strong> and demand has dropped.<\/li><li>Airlines and tourism industry are the\nobvious victims of lockdowns all over the world.<\/li><li>Massive <strong>unemployment<\/strong> has been\nunleashed by the lockdowns, especially amongst the migrant workers in the\ninformal sector. Indian government has responded through cash transfer using\nJhanDhan accounts.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>International response to the Covid-19\npandemic has been relatively efficient and transparent compared to the SARS\noutbreak, nonetheless, mistakes have been committed in the delayed announcement\nof the Public Health Emergency of International Concern by WHO and delayed imposition\nof international travel restrictions. <\/li><li>UN Security Council has also failed to\ntake definitive decisions because of the geo-political rivalry between US and\nChina.
