These are a hundred times faster than\nthe present petascale supercomputers.<\/li><li>The range of supercomputers is Kilo, Mega, Giga,\nTera, Peta and Exa. Exa is followed by 18 zeros which are billion times faster\nthan mobile phones.<\/li><li>With the help of exascale supercomputers,\nCOVID-19 spike protein simulations in various scenarios can run within a day,\nrather than weeks or months.<\/li><li>Supercomputers are resources for simulation of\nbiological materials like molecules that make up cells, membranes, and muscles.\n<\/li><li>They also simulate various processes that occur\nunder the influence of chemical agents. They can solve the vast number of\nequations in a short period.<\/li><li>In biological simulations, a protein and a\nmembrane can have millions of atoms. <\/li><li>Scientists have to solve millions of equations\nfor every small atom, which they must doa thousand times more. This is\ntime-consuming.<\/li><li>So, computational scientists are creating\nsimulations for various processes using supercomputers. <\/li><li>These simulations take a huge amount of\ncomputing power and exascale computers being developed by many countries will\ncome to their help.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How\nSupercomputers Help in Fighting Viruses?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Coronavirus has many mushroom-shaped proteins\nsticking out of small shells. <\/li><li>The proteins contain RNA that replicates itself\nwhen the virus attaches to the human cell. <\/li><li>Scientist are trying to answer how does the RNA\nof the virus get inside the human cell, how it is taking over the DNA of the\nhuman cell? <\/li><li>Answers\nto these questions can take time when studied in the laboratory. <\/li><li>But, with the help of supercomputers, biologists\nand experts can generate vaccines within a short period and can protect humans\nfrom this deadly virus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">C-DAC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>India\u2019s\n<strong>Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) <\/strong>has announced a<strong>hackathon\nSAMHAR COVID-19<\/strong>to fight the coronaviruspandemic outbreak.<\/li><li>SAMHAR COVID-19 stands for <strong>Supercomputing\nusingA<\/strong>I,<strong> ML<\/strong>, <strong>and HealthcareAnalytics based Research.<\/strong><\/li><li>C-DAC has embarked on this program as an <strong>opportunity\nfor researchers to identify, track, and forecast the outbreak by using AI and\nto aid the discovery of the drug.<\/strong><\/li><li>This hackathon intends to prepare the research\ncommunity to make use of HPC-AI and keep ready for the future.<\/li><li>Hackathon is open to <strong>researchers,\nintellectuals, MSMEs, startups and industries<\/strong> who are engaged in bringing\nout innovative ideas for prediction, forecasting and building health models\nthat could change the perception of pandemic outbreaks using AI on\nsupercomputers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National\nSupercomputing Mission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>To meet the computational demands of\nresearchers, intellectuals, MSMEs, startups and industries the <strong>National Supercomputing\nMission (NSM)<\/strong> was started.<\/li><li>Through the mission,a vast supercomputing grid,\nwhich consists of more than 70 high-performance computing facilities, are being\ninstalled across the country.<\/li><li>The main objective of this mission is to make\nIndia one of the world leaders in supercomputing and to enhance the capability\nof solving problems of national and global purposes.<\/li><li><strong>The Department of Science and Technology\n(DST) and the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeiTy)\nalong with C-DAC Pune and IISC Bangalore are <\/strong><strong>collaboratingfor the mission. <\/strong><\/li><li>The overall estimated cost of the Mission is <strong>Rs.4500 crore<\/strong>to be spent over a\nperiod of seven years beginning from 2020. <\/li><li>India\u2019s first supercomputer was Param Shivay which was assembled at IIT\n(BHU).
