{"id":2570,"date":"2020-04-14T12:30:54","date_gmt":"2020-04-14T07:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2570"},"modified":"2020-04-14T12:30:54","modified_gmt":"2020-04-14T07:00:54","slug":"role-of-sex-hormones-in-metabolism-and-immune-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/role-of-sex-hormones-in-metabolism-and-immune-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Role of Sex Hormones in Metabolism and Immune System"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers from Australia identified differences in the way the\nimmune system isacting in the body fat of male and female mice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Australian researchers studied the visceral\nadipose tissue (VAS), fat tissue in the mice.<\/li><li>The fat tissue is found in the abdominal region\naround various organs and also includes perigonadal VAT which includes fat\ntissuessurrounding the ovaries in females and testes in males.<\/li><li>The study showed an elevated expression of\ninflammatory genes in the male VAT than in the female VAT. <\/li><li>The male VAT had a special population of stromal\ncells which made the cytokine IL-33.<\/li><li>Many studies in the past considered VAT as an\nenergy storage organ and have endocrine functions. <\/li><li>In endocrine function, VAT secretes adipokines\nand hormones that help in energy balance and metabolism<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Controlling Immune Response by VAT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The study shows that the perigonadal VAT from\nmale mice had many regulatory T cells (Treg) than of female mice.<\/li><li>The Treg cells help in controlling the immune\nresponse to the self and external cells.<\/li><li>The cells protect the body from autoimmune\ndiseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.<\/li><li>The Treg cells in the male mice showed a\ndistinct phenotype, functional parameter, and gene expression compared to\nfemale cells.<\/li><li>The functioning of VAT in male mice and male\nhumans is almost similar.<\/li><li>Both are susceptible to metabolic disease like\ntype 2 diabetes than females.<\/li><li>In humans too, the inflammation of adipose\ntissue is higher in men than in women.<\/li><li>The human adipose tissue (omental) harbours Treg\ncells of a phenotype similar to that found in mice Treg cells.<\/li><li>&nbsp;The study\nimplies that the difference in the Treg cell distribution seen in VAT of males\nand females mice may hold in humans.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The study implies that the way the trials are conducted with\nanimal models for research or disease will not hold equally good for male and\nfemale.&nbsp; For example: when studying about\nmetabolism or immunity diseases, male mice are used.
