{"id":2566,"date":"2020-04-14T12:25:32","date_gmt":"2020-04-14T06:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2566"},"modified":"2020-04-14T12:25:32","modified_gmt":"2020-04-14T06:55:32","slug":"innovative-treatment-convalescent-plasma-therapy-for-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/innovative-treatment-convalescent-plasma-therapy-for-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovative Treatment-Convalescent Plasma Therapy for COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Science and\nTechnology (SCTIMST) <\/strong>developed an innovative treatment for the COVID-19\ndisease called <strong>Convalescent Plasma Therapy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>SCTIMST,\nan <strong>institute of national importance<\/strong> has taken a progressive step\nfor the treatment of COVID-19 patients.<\/li><li>The Convalescent Plasma Therapy aims to use the\nimmune power of a recovered COVID-19 person for treatingan infected person.<\/li><li>The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR)\nhas given the approval for carrying out the novel treatment.<\/li><li>SCTIMST has applied for permissions to the Drug\nController General of India (DCGI) for relaxation of the norms for blood\ndonation.<\/li><li>This plasma therapy is a <strong>passive immunization<\/strong>,\nwhere the protection given is temporary. <\/li><li>The effectiveness of the treatment lasts till\nthe antibodies injected remain in the bloodstream.<\/li><li>This is an experimental therapy restricted for\nseverely affected patients only and conducted as a clinical trial.<\/li><li>COVID clinics of five medical college hospitals\nare partnering with SCTIMST.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mode of Treatment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>First, the potential donor has to undergo a\nblood test. The test must be negative for COVID-19 and the donor had to be\ndeclared cured. Then the potential donor has to be asymptomatic for 28 days. <\/li><li>Then the blood is collected from the donor and\nserum is separated.<\/li><li>The serum is screened for\nvirus-neutralisingantibodies i.e. convalescent serum.<\/li><li>Convalescent serum, rich in antibodies for the\npathogen is administrated to the diseased patient.<\/li><li>The antibody will stay for at least two to four\ndays on the recipient. During this period, the patient will recover.<\/li><li>The immune system mounts robust combat on the\nvirus with the help of the antibody.<\/li><li>Research reports from the USA and China show\nthat the beneficial effect of recovery from plasma transfusion is gained in the\nfirst three to four days and the effect is not visible later. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Safe Is The\nTreatment?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>With modern blood banking techniques, it is not\ndifficult to match the blood type donor and the recipient. The risks of\ntransferring known infectious agents are low. <\/li><li>Before donating the blood, the donor will be\nexamined and tested for mandatory factors such as hepatitis, HIV, malaria, and\nso on to ensure that different pathogens are not transmitted to the recipient.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>This therapy is not simple, due to the\ndifficulty in acquiring the significant amounts of plasma from the survivors. <\/li><li>Most of the victims of COVID-19 are aged\npatients and suffering from other medical conditions such as hypertension and\ndiabetes. So not all the recovered patients can donate the blood.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Institute of National Importance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The premier public higher education institutions\nin India are awarded as Institute of National Importance (INI) by an Act of\nParliament. These institutions are pivotal players in developing highly skilled\npersonnel within the specified region.<\/li><li>INIs receive special recognition and funding\nfrom the Government of India.<\/li><li>Five conventional INIs for medicines are PGIMER\nChandigarh, AIIMS New Delhi, JIPMER Pondicherry, NIMHANS Bangalore, and SCTMIST\nThiruvananthapuram.<\/li><li>These institutes are sub-grouped under different\nspecialized sectors like agricultural sciences, design, engineering, medicine,\nmanagement, information technology etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Science and Technology (SCTIMST) developed an innovative treatment for the COVID-19 disease called Convalescent Plasma Therapy.
