{"id":2545,"date":"2020-04-07T11:50:39","date_gmt":"2020-04-07T06:20:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2545"},"modified":"2024-06-07T17:50:27","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T12:20:27","slug":"new-chickpea-variety-developed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/new-chickpea-variety-developed\/","title":{"rendered":"New Chickpea Variety Developed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian scientists have developed a new drought-tolerant chickpea\nvariety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The development of the new chickpea variety is a\ncollaborative effort of scientists from National Institute of Plant Genome\nResearch, New Delhi, University of Hyderabad and Indian Institute of Pulses\nResearch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The new variety is a genetically modified\nvariety. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has a high tolerance to drought and has high\niron and zinc content in the seeds due to the modifications made in the plant\u2019s\ngrowth substance called cytokinin in the root.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cytokinin and Auxin are two major plant hormones\nthat regulate root development. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the new variety, scientists expressed a gene\nfor an enzyme called cytokinin oxidase 6 (CKX6).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This enzyme degrades cytokinin under a\nroot-specific promoter (P WRKY31) in chickpea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researchers found that limiting the cytokinin\nactivity led to roots growing deep in the soil and acquiring more water and\nnutrients from the soil during drought.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As such, the plants acquired more resources from\nthe soil, lived longer and produced more seeds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, the result of this long and branched root\nsystem is high iron and zinc content in the seeds. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to the scientists, yield loss in\nchickpea can be reduced by following this cytokinin-manipulated enhancement of\nroot system combined with traditional breeding practices. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Threat of Genetic Modification<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As per the researchers, the gene and promoter\nboth were from the chickpea itself. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This means that there is no threat of genetic\nmodification harming humans. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In many cases of genetic modifications in food\ncrops across the world, genes from specific bacterial species were used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This usage has led to many questioning the\nharmfulness of such food crops to human consumption. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In India too, there is a ban on genetically\nmodified food crops. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only Bt cotton, which is genetically modified\nwith genes taken from <strong><em>bacillus thuringiensis&nbsp;(Bt) <\/em><\/strong>is allowed\nfor growing in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importance of Chickpea<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Chickpea, also know as benga gram, is one of the\nmajor sources of protein for people in the country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The crop is grown mainly in semi-arid regions\npost-monsoon season.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In such conditions, the crop faces the threat of\ndrought and yields dropping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is thus a need for the development of\ndrought-tolerant chickpea varieties with high yields. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The new variety well suits the prevailing\nchickpea cultivation conditions in the country and will help farmers earn\nbetter returns with high yields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India already ranks first in the cultivation of\nChickpea in the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News Indian scientists have developed a new drought-tolerant chickpea variety.
