Key Ocean Current is Getting Disrupted by Arctic Ice Melt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers from NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion\nLaboratory and others have identified how arctic ice melt is disrupting and\nimportant seawater current called the Beaufort Gyre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The Beaufort gyre plays an\nimportant role in keeping Western Europe warm. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But, with the melting of Arctic\nice, unprecedented cold freshwater may alter the climate of Europe. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gyre contains fresh cold\nwater and flows in a clockwise direction at the surface of the Western Arctic\nOcean near Canada. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It naturally collects the fresh\ncold water from the melting of glaciers and river runoff. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to researchers, this\nfresh cold water is important as it floats above the saltwater in the ocean and\ndoes not allow the sea ice to melt. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gyre, as it collects the\ncold water, it releases the water into the Atlantic Ocean slowly over many\ndecades. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Atlantic Ocean current\ncarries the water in small amounts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since the calculations began in\n1990, the gyre has accumulated more cold water to the tune of 8,000 cubic\nkilometres. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gain in water, as per the\nnew study is due to the melting of sea ice in summer and autumn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The decline in Arctic ice over\nthe decades has exposed the Beaufort Gyre to winds, which spun the gyre faster\nand allowing it to collect more freshwater.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, the westerly winds moved\nthe gyre in one direction for 20 years. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This increased the speed and\nsize of the gyre and also keeping the water within the Arctic Ocean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In general, the winds reverse\ntheir direction every six to seven years, but this movement of wind in one\ndirection for decades is unusual. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientists are of the opinion\nthat if the winds change their direction anytime, the gyre rotates in a\ncounter-clockwise direction, and releases all the stored water at once. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When such huge amounts of water\nreleased into the Atlantic Ocean there would be hemisphere-wide implications\nfor the climate. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientists are of the opinion\nthat the impact will be severe for Western Europe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freshwater, when released\ninto the Atlantic Ocean will alter the Northern Atlantic\u2019s surface water\ndensity. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Arctic water loses heat and\nsinks to the bottom of the ocean where it drives the water from the\nNorth-Atlantic Ocean to the tropics in a conveyor-belt-like current called the\nAtlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This current regulates the heat\ntransfer from tropics to the other parts of the world especially northern\nlatitudes of Europe and North America. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per scientists, if the\ncurrent is slowed down, it could impact all forms of life, especially marine\nlife. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Though the wind had provided\nadded energy to the Beaufort Gyre, the system is in the balance as the created\nsmall circular eddies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But, this also poses a risk as\nit will lead to more sea ice melt with cold freshwater on the surface mixing\nwith warm saltwater from below. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It also impacts the flow of\nnutrients and may affect marine life. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The human world is only now discovering the impacts of sea ice melt on climate systems and this research is showing
