{"id":2520,"date":"2020-02-07T11:00:55","date_gmt":"2020-02-07T05:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2520"},"modified":"2020-02-07T13:00:47","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T07:30:47","slug":"loss-of-genetic-connectivity-due-to-human-activity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/loss-of-genetic-connectivity-due-to-human-activity\/","title":{"rendered":"Loss of Genetic Connectivity Due to Human Activity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A detailed study shows how human activity is\nimpacting the genetic connectivity of four wide-ranging mammals of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The major reasons for the loss\nof biodiversity across the world are the changing landscape, habitat loss,\nglobal climate change, and fragmentation. <\/li><li>Now, human activity too can add\nto the list. <\/li><li>According to a study conducted\nby National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bengaluru, human activity is\nleading to loss of genetic connectivity, which is the movement of animals\nacross habitat patches for mating and genetic exchange.<\/li><li>The study was conducted in\nCentral India among four wide-ranging mammals of India &#8211; tigers, sloth bears,\njungle cats and leopards.<\/li><li>Genetic differentiation was\nstudied among them.<\/li><li>To understand genetic\nconnectivity, DNA extracted from faecal samples were studied.<\/li><li>The faecal samples were taken\nfrom nine protected areas between 2012 and 2017.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importance of Genetic Connectivity <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Juveniles of several mammalian\ncarnivores leave their mother\u2019s territory and move away to establish their own\nterritory. <\/li><li>In this pursuit, males travel\nlonger distances than females. <\/li><li>Isolation of habitat patches\ndue to habitat loss and fragmentation are leading to restricted movement of\nthese mammals across habitat patches and hence the exchange of genes through\nmating is being curtailed which increases the probability of extinction of a\nspecies.<\/li><li>Hence, maintaining connectivity\nis important for the long-term persistence of the species. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impact of Human Activities <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>According to the study, the\nland-use pattern, population density, nearby roads and traffic affected the\ngenetic structure of the species.<\/li><li>Of the species validated for\nthe study, tigers found to be the most affected by the human footprint.<\/li><li>The study found that though\ntigers are known to travel long distances and often travel through agriculture\nfields, in Central India they do not have a high genetic exchange. <\/li><li>Jungle cats were found to be\nleast impacted due to the variety of habitats they occupy that includes\nforests, scrublands, grasslands, and irrigated agricultural lands close to\nforests.<\/li><li>However, the research team for\nthe study found several road-kills of jungle cats. <\/li><li>The team calls for building\nunderpass and overpasses for mitigating road-kills and enabling smooth animal\nmigration. Such structures will also ensure that habitat fragmentation is\nrestricted.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Positive Works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The country is now paying attention to the issue of animal migration and as such works are being undertaken to build wildlife corridors.<\/li><li>Also, engineering reforms are also taking place so that infrastructure development does not hamper the movement of animals across habitats. <\/li><li>In 2019, a detailed document that lays out regulatory requirements for developing roads, railways, power lines had been released by the Ministry of Environment along with the Wildlife Institute of India.<\/li><li>The NHAI and all PWDs were instructed to follow these guidelines.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/\">Best IAS Institute in Delhi<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.in\/\">Best IAS Academy in Delhi<\/a><\/strong>,  <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/subjectoffered.php\">Best IAS Coaching in Delhi<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News A detailed study shows how human activity is impacting the genetic connectivity of four wide-ranging mammals of India.
