{"id":2487,"date":"2020-01-07T11:40:55","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T06:10:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2487"},"modified":"2024-06-06T14:35:27","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T09:05:27","slug":"a-rise-in-green-cover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/a-rise-in-green-cover\/","title":{"rendered":"A Rise in Green Cover"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The forest survey of India or the India State of\nForest Report (ISFR) released by the Ministry of Environment Forest &amp;\nClimate Change (MOEFCC) showed that the overall forest cover in the country has\nincreased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As per the ISFR 2019 data, forest cover in the\ncountry has increased by 3,976\nsqkm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, there is a sharp decline in forest cover in\nnortheastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Mizoram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total forest cover of the country is 7,12,249 sqkm\nwhich is 21.67% of the geographical area of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is 0.12% more than last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ISFR <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The ISFR is done biennially. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It assesses forest and tree\ncover, bamboo resources, carbon stock and forest fires.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>States that showed an increase\nin forest cover are Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>State with the highest forest\ncover is Madhya Pradesh. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>States with the highest\nproportion of forest cover are Mizoram (85.4%), Arunachal Pradesh (79.63%) and\nNagaland (75%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the assessment, tree cover\nwhich is defined as patches of trees less than 1 hectare and is outside\nrecorded forest area, grew by 1,212 sq. km.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The total green cover of the\ncountry thus increased by 5,188 sq km or 0.6%. This is an area the size of Goa\nand Delhi combined.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The total tree cover of the\ncountry as per ISFR data stood at 8,07,276 sq km.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The area with trees and forest\ncover made up 25.56% of the total area of India. In the earlier assessment, it\nwas 24.39%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per the Ministry, the\ndecline in tree cover in forest areas is due to the issuance of land titles to\ntribal population and increase of tree cover outside forest areas in the form\nof plantations and afforestation activities. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, there are some\nvariations in the canopy density as per the data. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moderately Dense Forest (MDF)\narea of 1,755 sq km became very dense forest (VDF) and 2,782 sqkm of MDF\nregressed into lower quality \u2018open forest (OF),\u2019\nScrub forest\u2019 or \u2018Non forest.\u2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The officially classified\nforests, either by states or centre, have decreased a little by 330 sqkm. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forests that are outside the\nrecorded area have increased by 4,306 sq km.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tree cover outside forest area\ncomprised 29.38\nmillion hectares which were 36.4% of the total tree and\nforest cover. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ujjwala Connection<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>While releasing the ISFR report, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar pointed out that sustained conservation efforts, afforestation efforts, and other government policies have led to the rise in forest cover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He particularly mentioned the impact of Pradhan Mantri Ujjjwala Yojana in reducing dependence on forests for fuelwood. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As part of the ISFR 2019, a survey was conducted in 1,110 villages in the forest fringes to study the impact of Ujjawala Yojana and the usage of forests for fuelwood, fodder, and bamboo. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the assessment, it was found that those living in the forest fringes collected 8,52,90,000 tonnes of fuelwood, 105,30,39,000 tonnes of fodder, 584,8204 cubic metres of small timber and 18,34,000 tonnes bamboo&nbsp;annually. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maharashtra witnessed the maximum removal of fuelwood at 95,39000 tonnes.
