{"id":2481,"date":"2020-01-04T10:35:27","date_gmt":"2020-01-04T05:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2481"},"modified":"2024-06-07T16:42:05","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T11:12:05","slug":"the-kalapani-issue-india-and-nepal-to-hold-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/the-kalapani-issue-india-and-nepal-to-hold-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"The Kalapani Issue: India and Nepal to Hold Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>India and Nepal are set to resolver the Kalapani border issues\nthrough dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In the latest political map of\nIndia, the area Kalapani near Nepal border was included in the map.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India claims that it is part of\nthe country\u2019s sovereign territory and no way altered the border of Nepal. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nepal claims that Kalapani is a\npart of it. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ministry of External Affairs,\nin a press release stated that both the countries will hold diplomatic talks at\nForeign Secretary-level to resolve the issue. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, the Ministry noted that\nthe boundary delineation issue with Nepal is going as per the existing\nmechanisms. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Nepal, the Supreme Court of\nthe country sought the government to submit the country\u2019s original map\nexchanged with India in 1816 as part of Sugauli treaty of 1816 within 15 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Confusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Lipulekh pass which is in\nKalapani is at the India-China-Nepal tri-junction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This has strategic significance\nfor India. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The high Lipulekh pass allows\nIndia to monitor the activities of China at the border. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nepal sought to use the node as\na trade point with both India and China.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With the inclusion of the pass\nin India\u2019s revised political map, Nepal is miffed as it claims that Lipulekh\nand Kalapani are part of its territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the 1816 Sugauli treaty\nsigned between Nepal and British India, identified Kali river as the border\nwith Nepal. This is at the border of Uttarakhand and Nepal. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nepal claims that the river to\nKalapani\u2019s west is the main Kali river and hence Kalapani is a part of it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India claims that a ridgeline\nto the east of Kalapani is the border and hence it is a part of its territory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rocky Relations <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>India-Nepal ties have been\nrocky since the adoption of new Constitution by Nepal in 2015 and the alleged\nblockade of trade by people of Terai region with the help of India. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, the demonetisation of\n2016 had hurt Nepal badly. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India, on its part not pleased\nwith Nepal joining China\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nepal is displeased with India\nprioritising BIMSTEC and BBIN over SAARC. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To sum up, India\u2019s ties with Nepal are simmering and it cannot be led to further simmering due to the Kalapani issue.
