{"id":2464,"date":"2019-12-31T11:16:25","date_gmt":"2019-12-31T05:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2464"},"modified":"2019-12-31T11:16:25","modified_gmt":"2019-12-31T05:46:25","slug":"cancer-burden-is-growing-across-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/cancer-burden-is-growing-across-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Cancer Burden is Growing Across India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In News <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A research paper titled <em>History of Growing\nburden of Cancer in India: From Antiquity to 21st century<\/em>has traced the\ngrowing burden of cancer across states in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In-Detail <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The study conducted by\nresearchers from Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata, and Robert Smith from Kings\nCollege, London noted that the reason for the growing incidence of cancer in\nthe country is due to epidemiological transition and better cancer diagnostics\nusage.<\/li><li>In India, the recording of\ncancer cases began in the 19th century with the introduction of biopsy and\npathological examination by the colonial British regime.<\/li><li>As cancer is the disease of\nolder people, the incidence of cancer increasers among old people. <\/li><li>Populous and least developed\nstates where cancer diagnostics equipment is inadequate will see the maximum\nincrease in cancer cases.<\/li><li>The study offers lessons to the\nstate governments in cancer care as there is an epidemiological transition.<\/li><li>The transition is fastest in\nKerala and is slowest in Uttar Pradesh.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Difference Between The States <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The incidence of cancer cases\nin Kerala is high compared to Uttar Pradesh is due to demographic and social\nvariables, availability of health care facilities and low incidence of\nmortality due to infectious diseases. <\/li><li>Uttar Pradesh still has hight\nmortality due to communicable diseases. <\/li><li>The report also found that\nthere is a transition in the type of cancers occurring in India. <\/li><li>While there is a decline in cancers\ndue to infections, such as the stomach, penile and cervical cancers, there is\nan increase in cancers associated with energy intake, physical activity\nimbalance, and aging &#8211; breast, prostate and colorectal cancers. <\/li><li>The study notes that this\ncancer transition necessitates site-specialised cancer surgeons. For example,\nKerala needs more breast oncologists and UP needs more gynecological oncologists.<\/li><li>As per the study, the\nassociation of tobacco chewing with cancer is known for over 100 years, only\nrecently that it has been noted that it is the cause for the fifth of all the\ncancers in India. <\/li><li>The study further notes that\nout-of-pocket expenditure for private inpatient cancer care in India is three\ntimes higher&nbsp; and 40% of the cancer costs\nare met through borrowing, and contributions from friends and relatives. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Conclusion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research provides various insights for the\ngovernment in providing proper cancer care in the country.
