{"id":2462,"date":"2019-12-27T11:43:15","date_gmt":"2019-12-27T06:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2462"},"modified":"2019-12-27T11:43:15","modified_gmt":"2019-12-27T06:13:15","slug":"deaths-due-to-road-fatalities-mortality-among-young-men-is-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/deaths-due-to-road-fatalities-mortality-among-young-men-is-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Deaths Due to Road Fatalities &#8211; Mortality Among Young Men Is High"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A study published in <em>Lancet Public Health<\/em> found that death\ndue to road accidents are high among the young population of the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The study India State-Level\nDisease Burden Initiative published in the journal <em>Lancet Public Health <\/em>showed\nthat the leading cause of death among young men in the age group of 15-39 years\nwas due to road injury in 2017.<\/li><li>According to the study, this is\nthe second largest killer among both the sexes. <\/li><li>The study is the first comprehensive\npopulation-level estimates of road injury deaths by type of road uses in each\nstate.<\/li><li>The estimates were based on\nverbal autopsy reports. <\/li><li>It covered the period from 1990\nto 2017.<\/li><li>Total deaths due to road\ninjuries in the country during this period was 58.7% compared to 8.1% globally.\n<\/li><li>In 2017 there occurred 2,19,000\nroad injury&nbsp;deaths in the country. Of them, 77% of the deaths were of men,\nwith death rates three times higher than women.<\/li><li>For the population as a whole,\nthe death rates are standardised at 17.2 deaths per 1 lakh population. <\/li><li>For men, it was 25.7 per 1 lakh\npopulation and for women, it was 8.5 per 1 lakh population. <\/li><li>Among the type of road users,\npedestrians accounted for 35.1% (76,729) deaths and older adults were the\nlargest casualties. <\/li><li>Motorcyclists accounted for\n30.9% of all road fatalities. <\/li><li>Motor vehicle occupants\naccounted for 26.4%. <\/li><li>Cyclists accounted for 7% of\nroad fatalities. <\/li><li>The death rates due to road\ninjuries were higher among motorcyclists and cyclists at 69% and 33%. This is\nhigher than anywhere in the world.<\/li><li>According to the study, if the\ndeath rates in 2017 due to road injuries were to continue, none of the states\nin the country will be able to achieve the SDG 2020 target of reducing such\ndeaths by half from 2015 to 2020 or even by 2030.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Time and again several reports from both public and private agencies\nshow that the burden of death due to road accidents is high in India. On its\npart, the government has brought in the Motor Vehicles Act with steep penalties\nfor traffic violations in the hope that by making people follow the rules, road\naccidents can be reduced. But, partial implementation of the Act by the states\nis hampering the progress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Infrastructural issues like poor road design and poor maintenance\nare other reasons for road accidents.
