{"id":2456,"date":"2019-12-23T12:49:13","date_gmt":"2019-12-23T07:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2456"},"modified":"2019-12-23T12:49:13","modified_gmt":"2019-12-23T07:19:13","slug":"detecting-herbicides-using-carbon-dots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/detecting-herbicides-using-carbon-dots\/","title":{"rendered":"Detecting Herbicides Using Carbon Dots"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers from Assam have created carbon dots from the weed &#8211;\nwater hyacinth &#8211; to detect the herbicide &#8211; pretilachlor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The researchers, while trying\nto find ways to turn the weed water hyacinth into a value-added-product, they\nhave struck upon the idea of using it for detecting the herbicide pretilachlor.<\/li><li>Water hyacinth is found in\nwater bodies, and in Assam, almost all water bodies are infested with the weed.\n<\/li><li>For this purpose, the research\nteam has produced carbon nanoparticles from the weed.<\/li><li>The nanoparticles were\nselective and are sensitive to the herbicide. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carbon\nDots Making<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>To make the carbon\nnanoparticles called the carbon dots, the researchers harvested water hyacinth\nleaves, removed the chlorophyll, dried and powdered the leaves.<\/li><li>After undergoing several\ntreatments the powder is converted into carbon dots. <\/li><li>A nanoparticle which is less\nthan 10 nanometre is called a dot or nanodot. <\/li><li>The carbon dots created by the\nresearch team gave green fluorescence under UV light. <\/li><li>This is due to a small oxygen\nfunctional groups on the surface of the dot. <\/li><li>The team studied the herbicide\npretilachlor mixed in water and carbon dots using special equipment. <\/li><li>In the presence of\npretilachlor, the fluorescence intensity of the carbon dots increased. <\/li><li>While the team tested the\ncarbon dots with other herbicides, they found that the dots were extremely\nsensitive to pretilachlor and could detect even small traces of the herbicide. <\/li><li>After studying the\neffectiveness of the carbon dots in the lab, the team collected soil samples\nacross the state and tested for pretilachlor.<\/li><li>The team also described how the\nelectron transfer happens between the dot and the herbicide that is enabling\nflorescence enhancement. <\/li><li>The team is of the view that\ntheir model will be a viable alternative to expensive sensors available in the\nmarket to detect herbicide contamination. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News Researchers from Assam have created carbon dots from the weed &#8211; water hyacinth &#8211; to detect the herbicide &#8211; pretilachlor.
