{"id":2453,"date":"2019-12-23T12:45:58","date_gmt":"2019-12-23T07:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2453"},"modified":"2019-12-23T12:45:58","modified_gmt":"2019-12-23T07:15:58","slug":"killing-cancer-cells-using-plant-extract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/killing-cancer-cells-using-plant-extract\/","title":{"rendered":"Killing Cancer Cells Using Plant Extract"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A team of researchers from\nmultiple institutions has developed a new way to kill certain cancer cells\nusing plant extract. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The research team led by IIT\nHyderabad has developed a lipid-based nanoparticle with a chlorophyll-rich\nextract from the plant <em>Anthocephalus\ncadamba<\/em>and a near-infrared dye to kill selective\ncancer cells.<\/li><li>In traditional photothermal\ntherapy, heat is used to kill the cancerous cells. But, in the new method, the\nnear-infrared dye generates heat when exposed to infrared light to kill the\ncancer cells.<\/li><li>The plant extract generated an\nexcess amount of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) that caused cell death through\nautophagy. <\/li><li>Autophagy is the body\u2019s own\nmechanism to remove damaged cells.<\/li><li>The method is safe as the\nextract is found to kill only cancer cells, while not causing any significant\ncell death when released in healthy cells. <\/li><li>This is because the extract did\nnot increase the ROS insider normal cells and thus did not cause autophagy.<\/li><li>As per researchers, the heat\ngenerated by the near-infrared dye is used for destabilising the nanoparticle\nand releasing the extract into cancer cells. <\/li><li>The amount of dye used and the\nduration of illumination have been optimised so that the thermal effect\ntriggers the extract release. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Joint\nEfforts <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The research is a joint effort\nof researchers from IIT Bombay, University of Hyderabad, Bose Institute,\nKolkata and IIT Hyderabad. <\/li><li>The research was published int\neh journal <em>Nature<\/em>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Effective\nMechanism <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The research team has already\ndemonstrated the thermal effect of the extract two years ago, but how it caused\ncancer cell death is now known. <\/li><li>By studying breast cancer cell\nlines, the researchers found that the extract is increasing the reactive oxygen\nspecies in the cancer cells and leading to autophagy.<\/li><li>Researchers observed that when\nusing photothermal therapy, 50% of the cancer cells died but 45% grew back\nwithin a day. <\/li><li>When the photothermal therapy\nwas used with the extract, there was no significant growth of cancer cells even\nafter 48 hours showing the effectiveness of the extract. It had restricted cell\ngrowth. <\/li><li>The researchers confirmed cell\ndeath due to autophagy using a protein that is an autophagy marker. The amount\nof this protein was in excess in the cells, confirming autophagy as the cause\nof cancer cell death. <\/li><li>Also, the researchers observed\nthe variations in the protein marker depended on the amount of extract used. <\/li><li>Further, the researchers\nconfirmed the role of ROS in autophagy by testing with a ROS inhibitor that\ninhibits the generation of ROS in cells. When this was done, there was no\nsignificant cell death and there was no autophagy.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Testing\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The testing of the nanoparticle\nwith the plant extract was done on a moused model with breast cancer. <\/li><li>With the extract, the tumour\nvolume reduced significantly. <\/li><li>Also, the researchers observed\nthat there is no weight loss in the mouse indicating that the nanoparticle is\nbiocompatible and causes no adverse health effects. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News A team of researchers from multiple institutions has developed a new way to kill certain cancer cells using plant extract.
