{"id":2447,"date":"2019-12-16T16:03:27","date_gmt":"2019-12-16T10:33:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2447"},"modified":"2019-12-16T16:03:27","modified_gmt":"2019-12-16T10:33:27","slug":"un-releases-the-climate-change-performance-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/un-releases-the-climate-change-performance-index\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Releases the Climate Change Performance Index"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the ongoing COP25 climate summit in Madrid, the United Nations\nhas released the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The CCPI is a global assessment\nof emissions trajectories of major countries.<\/li><li>It measures the GHG emissions,\nrenewable energy and energy use and climate policies of 57 national and the\nEuropean Union. <\/li><li>India, which is constantly in\nnews for high leaves of air pollution figured among the top 10 best-performing\ncountries. The country is ranked ninth and is in the high category.<\/li><li>The country\u2019s per capita\nemissions are still low.<\/li><li>The country ranked better due\nto its ambitious 2030 emission targets and energy use categories.<\/li><li>The USA and Saudi Arabia are\nthe worst-performing nations.<\/li><li>These two major polluters are\nshowing no signs of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, as per the\nassessment.<\/li><li>This is due to the strong oil\nand coal lobby present in these two countries.<\/li><li>The US is last, followed by\nSaudi Arabia and Australia. <\/li><li>But, many counties reported a\nfall in emissions majorly due to fading out of coal in some of the industries. <\/li><li>As per the index, variations in\nclimate performance were observed within regions. <\/li><li>In the EU, while Sweden is the\nleader in reducing the emission, many countries are yet to comply with Paris\nclimate goals. <\/li><li>The report found that China has\ntaken medium action largely due to its heavy investments in renewable energy. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The\nIndex Weightage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>GHG Emissions &#8211; 40%<\/li><li>Renewable Energy &#8211; 20%<\/li><li>Energy use &#8211; 20% <\/li><li>Climate policy &#8211; 20%<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top\nRanking Countries <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Sweden &#8211; rank 4<\/li><li>Denmark &#8211; rank 5<\/li><li>Morocco &#8211; rank 6<\/li><li>United Kingdom &#8211; rank 7<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The\nClimate Goal <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In 2015, world nations agreed\nto limit the rise of global temperature to below two degrees centigrade above\nthe pre-industrial levels. <\/li><li>Now, the goal seems to be a\ndistant dream. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change is threatening humanity unlike anything before. From\nthe CCPI, it appears that many countries are yet to grasp the urgency of the\nmatter. When the climate tipping points are crossed, it affects not any\nparticular country but the whole world.
