{"id":2439,"date":"2019-12-11T12:29:11","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T06:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2439"},"modified":"2019-12-11T12:29:11","modified_gmt":"2019-12-11T06:59:11","slug":"indian-improves-its-human-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/indian-improves-its-human-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian Improves Its Human Development"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>India improved its rank in the United Nations Human Development\nIndex from 130 in 2017 to 129 in 2018. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The United Nations Human\nDevelopment Programme (UNDP) released the 2019 Human Development Report (HDR).<\/li><li>Human Development Index (HDI),\nan important aspect of the HDR, measures human development in three basic\ndimensions &#8211; life expectancy, education and per capita income.<\/li><li>Among 189 countries the HDI\nmeasured, India is ranked at 129 in 2018. <\/li><li>This is an improvement from 130\nin 2017. <\/li><li>According to the report, the\ngains India made in the past three decades in reducing poverty, increasing life\nexpectancy, providing access to education and access to health care are the\nreasons for the improvement in India\u2019s ranking. <\/li><li>Further, the report noted that\ninitiatives like Pradhan Mantri Jan Than Yojana and Ayushman Bharat are\nimportant in pushing ahead human development and leave no one behind.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other\nCountries <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The top three positions are\noccupied by Norway, Switzerland, and Ireland. <\/li><li>Germany and Hong Kong are in\nfourth place and Australia is in fifth place. <\/li><li>Among Indian neighbours,\ncountries that are ranked above India are Sri Lanka at 71st position and China\nat 85th position. <\/li><li>Bhutan is ranked at 134,\nBangladesh at 135, Myanmar at 145, Nepal at 147, Pakistan at 152 and\nAfghanistan at 170 are ranked lower.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High\nGrowth in South Asia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>According to the report, the\nfastest growth in human progress at 46% between 1990-2018 is in the South Asia\nregion followed by East Asia and the Pacific region at 43%. <\/li><li>As per the report, the HDI\nvalue of India increased by 50% from 0.431 to 0.647. This is above the average\nHDI of South Asian countries which is 0.642.<\/li><li>But, the reported noted that\ninequality in the country is on the rise. <\/li><li>In the inequality-adjusted HDI\n(IHDI), India dropped by one place to 130 and almost halving the progress made\nin the last 30 years from 0.647 to 0.477.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gender\nInequality <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The report notes that there is\ngroup-inequality across the world especially affecting women and girls.<\/li><li>There is gender equality\nanywhere in the world. <\/li><li>India is at 122 among 162\ncountries in Gender Inequality Index (GII).<\/li><li>Neighbouring countries that\nfare better than India are China &#8211; 39, Sri Lanka &#8211; 86, Bhutan &#8211; 99 and Myanmar\n&#8211; 106.<\/li><li>Also, the report notes that the\nworld will not be able to achieve the UN sustainable development goal of gender\nequality by 2030.<\/li><li>It forecasts that the world\nwill close the gender gap in the economy only after 202 years.<\/li><li>GII uses three dimensions to\nmeasure gender disparity &#8211; reproductive health, labor market participation, and\nempowerment.<\/li><li>The 2019 HDR report also\npresents a new report on how prejudices and biases affect gender equality. <\/li><li>It shows that only 14% of women\nand 10% of men across the world have no gender bias. <\/li><li>This, the report indicates is a\nbacklash on women empowerment and has a significant impact in areas where power\nis involved, especially in countries like India. <\/li><li>One of the major findings of\nthe report that climate change and technological innovations will lead to new\nforms of inequalities and may deepen the existing social and economic fault\nlines. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News India improved its rank in the United Nations Human Development Index from 130 in 2017 to 129 in 2018.
