{"id":2433,"date":"2019-12-11T10:40:25","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T05:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2433"},"modified":"2019-12-11T10:40:25","modified_gmt":"2019-12-11T05:10:25","slug":"high-effectiveness-of-indian-typhoid-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/high-effectiveness-of-indian-typhoid-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"High Effectiveness of Indian Typhoid Vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A new study published in <em>The New England Journal of Medicine\n(NEJM<\/em>) shows that of the three types of typhoid vaccines available for\ncommercial use, the Indian-made<strong> Typbar TCV<\/strong> vaccine was found to be\nhighly effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The vaccine Typbar TCV was\ndeveloped by <strong>Bharat Biotech<\/strong> and it was found to have <strong>81.6%<\/strong>\nefficacy in preventing typhoid fever at 12 months. <\/li><li>Among children aged between 9\nand 16 years, a single dose of the vaccine is found to be highly effective. <\/li><li>Typbar TCV was already\nrecommended by the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE)\nof the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2017. <\/li><li>In January 2018, the vaccine\nwas prequalified by WHO. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typhoid\nFever<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The fever is caused by the\nhighly contagious Salmonella&nbsp;Typhi bacteria.<\/li><li>Every year, around 11 million\nfall sick due to typhoid and 1,17,000 deaths due to the fever are reported.<\/li><li>The bacteria is spread through\ncontaminated food and water.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typbar\nTCV<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The vaccine is a conjugate\nvaccine, that is the antigen in the vaccine is chemically linked to a carrier\nprotein. In this case, it is a polysaccharide. <\/li><li>The vaccine was tested in\nNepal. <\/li><li>For the study, two other\nvaccines &#8211; polysaccharide typhoid vaccine and live, weakened typhoid vaccine\nwere tested.<\/li><li>These two have low efficacy\nthan Typbar TCV. <\/li><li>They show only 6-70% efficacy\ncompared to Typbar\u2019s&nbsp; 82% efficacy.<\/li><li>Typbar has other advantages\ntoo, it can be given to babies as young as six months while the other two\ncannot be given to children below two years of age. <\/li><li>According to WHO-SAGE, a large\nproportion of severe typhoid fever is found among children aged below two\nyears. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Multi-Drug\nResistant <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Typhoid bacteria can be treated\nusing antibiotics. <\/li><li>But, over the years, the\nbacteria have acquired multi-drug resistance. <\/li><li>Such infections have been\nrecorded across South Asia and India. <\/li><li>In Pakistan, since 2016, extensively\ndrug-resistant (XDR) typhoid is being reported. <\/li><li>XDR is booming prevalent in\nIndia, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. <\/li><li>Hence the need for a vaccine. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The\nTrials <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In a small phase-3 trial\nconducted in Nepal among two groups of people &#8211; 2-45 years old and 6-23 months,\nthe vaccine was found to be provoking an immune response in 98% of the\nvaccinated children. <\/li><li>In phase-2b human challenge\ntrials, healthy adults in the age group of 18-60 years without any prior\ntyphoid infection were vaccinated first and then were exposed to the bacteria.\nThe efficacy of the vaccine was 88%. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Export\nPotential <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The vaccine is licensed in\nIndia and available for clinical use. <\/li><li>Already the conjugate vaccine\nis being exported to Pakistan and some 10 million vaccines have been sent to\nPakistan. <\/li><li>Pakistan is the first country\nin the world to include the typhoid vaccine as part of its national\nimmunisation programme. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News A new study published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) shows that of the three types of typhoid vaccines available for <a class=\"mh-excerpt-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/high-effectiveness-of-indian-typhoid-vaccine\/\" title=\"High Effectiveness of Indian Typhoid Vaccine\">    [read more]<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2434,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[98],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.9 -
