{"id":2388,"date":"2019-12-02T15:04:22","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T09:34:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2388"},"modified":"2019-12-02T15:15:06","modified_gmt":"2019-12-02T09:45:06","slug":"private-sector-prescribes-antibiotics-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/private-sector-prescribes-antibiotics-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Private Sector Prescribes Antibiotics More"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A study by researchers from the Public Health Foundation of India\n(PHFI) has found that the private sector prescribes high levels of antibiotics\nin the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Large scale usage of\nantibiotics is leading to the evolution of bacteria that are resistant to\nantibiotics.<\/li><li>These superbugs are becoming\ndifficult to kill and there is a concern that they might lead to a global\npandemic. <\/li><li>India is one of the largest\nusers of antibiotics in the world and the threat of antimicrobial resistance is\nlooming large on the country.<\/li><li>Amid the concerns, the PHFI\nconducted the first-ever outpatient antibiotic prescription rates and patterns\nin the private sector.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The\nStudy <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As per the research, the\nprivate sector clocked antibiotic prescription rates of 412 per 1000 persons\nper year. <\/li><li>This is highest among children\nin the age group of 0-4 years &#8211; 636 per 1000 persons. <\/li><li>The lowers is the age group of\n10-19 years at 280 per 1000 persons. <\/li><li>In the twelve months of the\nstudy between May 2013 and April 2014, it was found that prescription rates\nwere higher in a certain segment in India than in developed countries.<\/li><li>Prescription of wide-spectrum\nantibiotics such as cephalosporins and quinolones&nbsp;were 38.2% and 16.3%\nhigher than in the United States (14% and 12.7%) and Greece (32.9% and 0.5%).<\/li><li>In the country, the\nprescription rates of beta-lactams-penicillins and cephalosporins for\nuncomplicated upper respiratory infections are higher than in Europe.<\/li><li>As per the study, antibiotics\nconsumption increased by 22% in the retail sector between 2012 and 2016. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not\nFollowing Guidelines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The study found that in the\ncountry, antibiotics are commonly prescribed for respiratory infections such as\ncommon cold, upper respiratory infections, acute bronchitis and acute cough. <\/li><li>Clinical guidelines do not\nallow antibiotic prescriptions in the above cases.<\/li><li>Of the 519 million antibiotic\nprescriptions in the country during the study period, 55% were for respiratory\ninfections, 10% for the genitourinary system, 9% for symptoms, signs and\nabnormal clinical findings. These infections are generally caused by a virus\nand are limiting in nature. <\/li><li>The authors of the study blame\nthe irrational use of antibiotics on the tactics used by Pharma companies to\nsell their products. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There needs to be awareness among the public, doctors and other\nstakeholders on the usage of antibiotics.
