{"id":2380,"date":"2019-11-30T11:11:30","date_gmt":"2019-11-30T05:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2380"},"modified":"2019-11-30T11:15:33","modified_gmt":"2019-11-30T05:45:33","slug":"nso-survey-debunks-odf-free-india-claim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/nso-survey-debunks-odf-free-india-claim\/","title":{"rendered":"NSO Survey Debunks ODF-Free India Claim"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A survey conducted by the National Statistical Organisation (NSO)\nhas debunked the government claim of Open Defecation Free-India (ODF-Free\nIndia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The governed has claimed that\n95% of the households in the country were covered under its flagship scheme\nSwachh Bharat Abhiyan and had claimed that India is now ODF-Free.<\/li><li>But, the NSO survey shows that\nonly 71% of the rural households in the country have access to toilets, poking\na hole into the government claims.<\/li><li>The survey was carried between\nJuly and December 2018, with October 1 as the reference date.<\/li><li>Before the survey began, big\nstates like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat have claimed\nthat they are 100% open defecation free.<\/li><li>States like Jharkhand, Madhya\nPradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu claimed to be of ODF-Free during the survey\nperiod. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The\nFindings <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The Survey shows that 42% of\nhouseholds in Jharkhand had no access to toilets at that time. <\/li><li>The gap was 37% in Tamil Nadu\nand 34% in Rajasthan. These two states were one of the earliest to declare\nthemselves as ODF.<\/li><li>For other states, the gap was\nKarnataka &#8211; 30%, Andhra Pradesh &#8211; 22% and Maharashtra &#8211; 22%.<\/li><li>While in the first week of\nOctober 2018 the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Grameen) said that 25 states and UTs\nare ODF with toilet access to 95% of the country. <br>\nThe NSO data shows that at that time 28.&amp;% of rural households have no\naccess to toilets. <\/li><li>Though, 71% of access to\ntoilets is in itself a big achievement to NSO\u2019s survey in 2012 where it was\nonly 40%.<\/li><li>The data on the usage of\ntoilets was also encouraging. According to NSO, 95% of households with access\nto toilets are using them. <\/li><li>This is a big achievement for\nthe government.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The data shows that the next\nbig challenge lies in the disposal of waste. <\/li><li>As per the data, while 50% of\nthe households use septic tanks 21% use signal pits. Both of these need to be\ncleaned and the fecal sludge must be disposed safely.<\/li><li>The Swachh Bharat scheme\nrecommended twin leach pit system was used only by 10% of households. <\/li><li>In this system the waste\ncomposts on its own without any need for disposal.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News A survey conducted by the National Statistical Organisation (NSO) has debunked the government claim of Open Defecation Free-India (ODF-Free India).
