{"id":2346,"date":"2019-11-19T12:48:57","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T07:18:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2346"},"modified":"2019-11-19T12:48:57","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T07:18:57","slug":"the-temperature-conundrum-of-the-sun-solved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/the-temperature-conundrum-of-the-sun-solved\/","title":{"rendered":"The Temperature Conundrum of the Sun Solved"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers along with an Indian scientist from the Indian Institute\nof Astrophysics have solved the sun conundrum that has puzzled solar physicists\nfor a long time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The temperature of the sun at\nits core is 15 million degrees Celsius. <\/li><li>At the surface layer called the\nphotosphere, it is merely 5,700 degrees C. <\/li><li>While it is natural to expect\nfrom any heating body without an external source to heat it, the temperature\ntends to decrease as it goes outside. <\/li><li>But, the sun\u2019s atmosphere,\nknown as the Corona has a higher temperature than the photosphere.<\/li><li>From outward of photosphere\ntemperature increases to one million degrees C or more in the Corona. This\nstretches to over a million kilometres. <\/li><li>This conundrum has puzzled\nsolar physicists.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spicules\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The Sun has many geyser-like\njets known as Spicules. <\/li><li>These appear as hairs in a\nphotograph, but these are 200-400 km wide and rise to a height of about 5000km\nabove the solar surface. <\/li><li>These spicules are key to\nanswering the puzzle. <\/li><li>Researchers have suspected that\nthese spicules act as conduits for heat and energy to get transferred from the\nlower atmosphere, bypassing the photosphere and reaching the upper atmosphere. <\/li><li>The current research shows how\nthese Spicules are formed and act as conduits through which hot plasma is\ntransferred to the Corona.<\/li><li>As per the researchers, the\nobservations revealed that the hot plasma heats up these spicules making them\nattain Coronal temperature.<\/li><li>The hot plasma consists of a\nmixture of negative and positive ions that are electrically charged.<\/li><li>They further found that the\nplasma emits extreme ultraviolet light and the coronal intensity increases as\nthe spicule propagates upwards.<\/li><li>1.6-metre Goode Solar Telescope\nat the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO), the world\u2019s largest solar telescope,\nwas used for making the observations. <\/li><li>The researchers matched these\nobservations with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly in NASA\u2019s Solar Dynamic Observatory spacecraft.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key\nFindings <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The burst of spicules\noriginates from a web-like network of magnetic structures on the surface of the\nSun.<\/li><li>At the footprints of the\nspicules, magnetic elements with opposite polarity to the magnetic network\nemerges. <\/li><li>Researchers also observed that\nopposing polarity cancels out on meeting each other, at the exact same time\nspicules that heat up the upper atmosphere appeared. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News Researchers along with an Indian scientist from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics have solved the sun conundrum that has puzzled solar physicists for <a class=\"mh-excerpt-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/the-temperature-conundrum-of-the-sun-solved\/\" title=\"The Temperature Conundrum of the Sun Solved\">    [read more]<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2347,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[98],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.9 -
