{"id":2328,"date":"2019-11-13T12:53:08","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T07:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2328"},"modified":"2019-11-19T13:14:55","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T07:44:55","slug":"10th-pneumonia-and-diarrhoea-progress-report-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/10th-pneumonia-and-diarrhoea-progress-report-released\/","title":{"rendered":"10th Pneumonia and Diarrhoea Progress Report Released"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>International Vaccine Access Centre (IVAC) has released the\n2019 Pneumonia and D<\/strong><strong>iarrhoea\nProgress R<\/strong><strong>eport&nbsp;Card<\/strong> that shows that both the diseases are still a big threat in India.\nThis is the 10th edition of the report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The report found that the 23\ncountries that account for 75% of under-five children\u2019s deaths pneumonia and\ndiarrhoea are failing the children in providing access to prevention and\ntreatment services.<\/li><li>10 key interventions such as\nbreastfeeding, vaccination, use of antibiotics, ORS, zinc supplementation and\naccess to care are analysed by the report. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Status\nof India <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As per the report, the threat\nposed by these two diseases is high in India.<\/li><li>The country is home to the\nlargest population of under-five children in the world and the diseases largely\naffect the children in this age group. <\/li><li>Though India improved its score\ndue to the introduction of the rotavirus vaccine and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine to the immunisation programme, the threat remains high. <\/li><li>While India\u2019s breastfeeding\nmetric at 55% is high among the 23 countries surveyed, the promotion of\nchildren receiving important treatments is still below the targets. <\/li><li>50% of children with diarrhoea\nreceive ORS (oral rehydration solution), while only 20% receive zinc\nsupplementation. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other\nCauses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Reports from organisations like\nSave the Children and UNICEF have found that, in 2017, the major risk factors\nfor pneumonia deaths in the country were: child wasting, that is the cause for\n53% deaths; outdoor air pollution, that is the reason for 27% deaths; and\nindoor air pollution from solid fuels &#8211; 22% deaths. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Increase\ninvestments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The report urges the global\ncommunity to increase investments and support countries to develop strategies\nand interventions to close the gaps and fasten progress. <\/li><li>As per the report, globally in\n2017, one in four deaths in children was due to diarrhoea and pneumonia. <\/li><li>The report notes a surprise\nthat access to newer vaccines such as pneumococcal vaccine and rotavirus vaccine, and\nbasic treatments like antibiotics and ORS are not reaching many children across\nthe 23 countries. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pneumonia and diarrhoea are preventable diseases through basic\ninterventions. As the report shows that the disease burden is high in the\ncountry, it only shows that the lack of intention on the part of the government\nto prevent these diseases. Also, it shows that the public health infrastructure\nof the country is not being able to handle such preventable diseases.
