{"id":2324,"date":"2019-11-11T14:37:36","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T09:07:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2324"},"modified":"2019-11-11T15:01:35","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T09:31:35","slug":"meghalayan-forests-similar-to-equatorial-rainforests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/meghalayan-forests-similar-to-equatorial-rainforests\/","title":{"rendered":"Meghalayan Forests &#8211; Similar to Equatorial Rainforests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>New research has shown that the Meghalaya\nrainforests are similar in structure and diversity to that of the rainforests\nfound in the equatorial regions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Meghalaya consists of lowland\ntropical rainforests. <\/li><li>These forests are the\nnorthernmost rainforests of the world. They are found north of the Tropic of\nCancer. <\/li><li>The new study discovers that\nthe rainforests near the equator and the Meghalayan rainforests have similar\nstructure and diversity. <\/li><li>In general, rainforests are\nfound in a region around the Equator between 5 degrees north and south\nlatitudes. <\/li><li>The region is the home to the\nlowland tropical rainforest. <\/li><li>Meghalaya and Namdapha of\nArunachal Pradesh, the northeastern states of India, are found to have the\nextreme spread of rainforests in the northern limits of the world. <\/li><li>Both these states receive heavy\nrainfall and are humid, a perfect setting for the growth of rainforests. They\nare species-rich rainforests.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Distribution <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Two hectares of forests were\nsurveyed for the research.<\/li><li>Over 2500 trees, shrubs and\nherbs were studied.<\/li><li>As per the research, 180\ndifferent taxa were identified of the total number of plants. <\/li><li>95% of the forests are made up of\ntropical Asian species. <\/li><li>The Meghalayan rainforests have\nfewer species compared to equatorial rainforests, but beta diversity was high. <\/li><li>These forests have a higher\nproportion of rare plants compared to equatorial forests. <\/li><li>Plants members from the families\nof Fagaceae&nbsp;and&nbsp;Theaceae have a good representation in Meghalayan\nrainforests. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Short Stature<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Though the structure of the\nMeghalayan rainforests is similar to equatorial ones, the trees here are\nshorter in height. <\/li><li>While in equatorial forests one\ncan find trees that grow 45m to 60m in height, in Meghalaya, the highest a tree\ncan grow is up to 30m. <\/li><li>This is a part of their\nevolution to survive at higher latitudes.<\/li><li>The tree density in Meghalayan\nforests stood at 467 trees per hectare.
