{"id":2321,"date":"2019-11-11T11:21:31","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T05:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2321"},"modified":"2019-11-11T14:26:54","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T08:56:54","slug":"first-evert-indian-brain-atlas-created","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/first-evert-indian-brain-atlas-created\/","title":{"rendered":"First Evert Indian Brain Atlas Created"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad has\ncreated the first-ever Indian Brain Atlas (IBA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nDetail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As per the researchers, it is\nfound that the average Indian brain was smaller in height, width and volume\ncompared to Caucasian and Eastern races. <\/li><li>The atlas is thus significant\nin treatment outcomes for neurological disorders like dementia, Alzheimer\u2019s,\netc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MRI\nScans<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It is a general practice by\nmedical practitioners to decide on a line of treatment based on Magnetic\nResonance Imaging (MRI) scan.<\/li><li>But, the reference they use is\ncreated by the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI), which is based on\nCaucasian brains. <\/li><li>As the Indian Brain Atlas (IBA)\nrevealed that Indian brains are smaller, there is a chance of misdiagnosis with\nMNI. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brain\nAtlases <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Talairach and Tournoux atlas is\nthe earliest known brain atlas. It was a manual drawing of the brain of a\nFrench woman.<\/li><li>The first digital human brain\natlas was created by MNI and International Consortium for Brain Mapping\n(ICBM)&nbsp;in 1993. It is thus used as a standard in neuroscience studies\nacross the world. <\/li><li>But, IIITH researchers have\ndemonstrated that this standard based on Caucasian brains is not ideal to\nanalyse brains of ethnicities such as the Indian brains. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Idea\nfor Research <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The need for the research arose\nas the MRI scanning machines come with preloaded MNI scans for comparison. <\/li><li>The Chinese and Koreans have\ntheir own set of brain atlases while there was no corresponding atlas for the\nIndian population. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The\nResearch <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>For bringing out an Indian\natlas, first a pilot project with 50 subjects were involved, evenly balanced\nacross genders. <\/li><li>MRI scans of these subjects\nwere taken across three different hospitals, at three different locations using\nthree different scanners for eliminating variations. <\/li><li>Later, the research team\nrecruited 100 willing participants to construct the Indian Brain Atlas. <\/li><li>The age group of the\nparticipants is between 21-30 years as the brain will mature around this age. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The\nFindings <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The researchers have found that\nthe height, width, and volume of Indian brains compared to Chinese, Korean and\nMNI are significantly lower. <\/li><li>For example, the volume of the\nhippocampus of the brain is lower for Indians. <\/li><li>Also, the structure of the\nIndian brain is different from other populations.<\/li><li>But, it is more relatable with\nthe Chinese and the Koreans that the Caucasians. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does\nSize Matter? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The discovery raises questions\nsuch as, \u2018dose size of the brain matter for being intelligent?\u2019<\/li><li>But, many scientists argue that\nsize is an indication for smartness but intelligence is dependent on how\nvarious parts of the brain communicate with each other. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Future\nWork <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The IIITH research team will\nfurther expand their work to creating brain atlases for different age groups\nlike 20-30, 30-40, 40-50 and 50-60. <\/li><li>This will help in understanding\nhow brain ages and how diseases like Parkinson\u2019s, dementia, etc., occur.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad has created the first-ever Indian Brain Atlas (IBA).
